Super Fresh-does it still exist?

Post by Ackman »

The last time I saw a Super Fresh, was in 2001. In PA, along US 13. It looked rather run down. Does this chain of grocers still exist?

Yes - they are a part of the A&P family of stores.

There are about 75 current locations in NJ, DE, MD, DC and PA, many of them former A&P stores (including the one in Newark, DE that even still LOOKS like an old A&P).

Its funny that you mentioned the Super Fresh on OldLondon Road In Newark. With the merger of A&P and Pathmark. A&P had three stores in this town all three miles apart. The one on old London road that was and A&P from the 50!S and a four year old Super Fresh Super Store on the same road.
Which one is two be closed this Friday, The Super Store! The only example of a late 1950!s A&P still in operation in Delaware by A&P is to remain open. It is a fine example of and A&P of that era and of the stores in the 1980!S that survived the closing of the Old Philadelphia division of A&P. Including, the original Green Paint job over the old A&P Red on the cases on check stands.
When ever I am up thar way I find some excuse to go in and buy some thing It is fun to shop there !

SuperFresh is still around...somehow. They acquired a bunch of locations (mostly the smaller, older stores that Giant didn't grab up) in the Philly suburbs from the now-defunct Clemens Family Markets earlier last year. Of course now Pathmark is part of A&P/Super Fresh.

Yes SF does exist, and this past year celebrated its 25th anniversary in grand style.

As was referenced above, click on http://www.superfreshfood.com

to find out all the latest about this great banner.

SF stores continue to get the fresh format makeover. And new locations are scheduled for Rockville, MD , among other locations, during the year.

Most of the Super Fresh stores near where I live in Bensalem, PA are newer Super Fresh Super Stores. The Super Fresh Super Store at Franklin Mills Mall and at Bleigh Avenue in Philadelphia, as well as The Food Basics on Bustelton Avenue in Philadelphia looks exactly like the A&P Fresh Market in Tinton Falls, NJ.

The Super Fresh Super Store in Bristol, Pa is one of the A&P/Super Fresh "Future Store" building, just like the one in Wayne, NJ.

There are also several Pathmark Super Centers that are near a Super Fresh. The Pathmark Super Center at Knights & Dunks Ferry Road, in Bensalem, is only a 1/2 mile south of the Franklin Mills Super Fresh Super Store.

I usually do my shopping at either the Super Fresh at Franklin Mills, the Pathmark at Knights Rd, or when I go to the shore, The A&P Food Market in Little Silver, NJ

The ones in Wynnewood, PA and Willow Grove, PA survive in centennial A&P buildings too. All three stores have different designs today.

a&p is in the process of changing most of the pathmark supercenters into Sav-A-Centers, and revamping most of its pathmark philly division. Lots of renovations, which most are very long over due. SuperFresh is one of A&P's fresh gourmet banners. Same with waldbaums, AP, SuperFresh, Food Emp, Foodmart. They are hoping to use pathmark as they're main banner to market under and expand out of the downstate ny-nj-philly-de area. But if they really can do this, remains to be seen (pathmark does very well in its traditional operating area but poorly outside of it). Most new AP's, Superfresh, foodmarts, food emp are all the same store layout inside, and even look the same outside. Pathmark has its own look to it (all those stores were put up premerger). AP just closed a few PM locations, in the ny area. West Hempstead, Former grand union pm took in 02. Also, Kew Gardens which PM took back in the 80's, before that it was a King Kullen, spent time as waldbuams and a few others (this store has been talked about here on these forms, it looks like a safeway with the arched roof and glass front). This store def has been around since early 60's. late 50's.

Interesting note, before the merger, pathmark renovated one store which reopened in the 2006-2007 time span which was IMPRESSIVE inside, looked like a stop n shop. Beautiful colors everywhere, nice colored floors, clean aisles, track lighting in every aisle, set up like a normal supermarket for once, sky lights letting light in over the entire produce section. It's odd that pathmark always used to put the deli and sea food in the middle of the store (in the middle of the sales floor).

Grand Union did something similar for a while with the deli (though not the seafood, that remained on the back outside wall). Their deli was actually 4 sided, with the main deli in front (right across from checkouts) and then the sides and back had prepared hot food items, cheeses, pre packed meats and such. They did this in the "glass front" stores (the whole front had a glass atrium I guess you would say where you entered from each end), which were 1990's time frame. They then reverted to the regular setup for the (very few) late 90's/early 2000 stores with the deli on the side or front corner.
