Delhaize ownership came after the "lion". Actually, Delhaize purchased a 34% interest in Food Town in 1974 and acquired a majority interest in 1976. The name change didn't happen until 1982-1983. In fact, the lion icon had been used in the Food Town house brand logo (and even on some stor...

Is the store you're referring to in the picture accompanying this article? Different store. The one in the article was a Ketner's store, which was a separate chain started by the same family. The entire Ketner's chain was sold to Winn-Dixie, and Food Town/Food Lion was started a few years later. I ...

The way I've always heard it told was that Food Lion was entering new markets with new competition, and had to find a new operating name in their new territory, much like Martin's and Giant-PA are. They came up w/Food Lion somehow, it resonated well, and they all got converted to Food Lion. That's ...

Wasn't Rexall a chain that partnered with people (independents) like the IGA grocery stores? I remember the Rexall name as a kid, but there was always other names attached to it. Actually, I believe Walgreens had a similar franchise-type agreement in some markets. I think they acted more as a distr...

It was Tom Smith. Before him, they used company founder Ralph Ketner in the ads.

I think a lot of chains also had "consumer advocate" positions filled my recognizable individuals. I remember reading about the one who used to be at Giant Foods recently. Lucky Stores also had a female spokesperson in the 1990s, but I don't think she was associated with any specific brand...

Does anyone know the relationship between Skaggs Cash Stores and Skaggs United Stores? In the Sacramento section on this site it mentions Skaggs Cash as the Safeway predecessor, but the ASC version has it as Skaggs United. Were these chains merged together at some point? I'm pretty sure they were j...

From the following link, it looks like the "s" went away for good about 1990 in the UK:

I doubt this is relevant, but the only Uni-Mart I know is a Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain that's pretty inferior to most Mid-Atlantic offerings these days. I doubt there was any connection. Separate chain, alas. Per their website, they started operations about ten years after the movie...

This is from the Price Chopper website - if you check the paragraph with the >>>> it sounds like an early Super Center (and more like the antique shop) - It appears to have been only in that one store, as far as I can see from the site and it doesn't say how long it existed. That wasn't entirely un...

Big Bear in San Diego

Anyone know about the disposition of the Big Bear chain in San Diego (which was unrealated to the chains of the same name in Seattle, Ohio, and North Carolina)? I'm told that some became warehouse stores and were ultimately branded Food4Less, but was the chain sold as a whole or piecemeal. If it was...

From way back when, I remember it being a slice of bread done in red, with More Value (acutally I think Terry is right, it was Mor-Value at one time) written inside of it instead of HT. That's exactly what I'm thinking. I'm remembering the Harris-Teeter name spelled out (in the font used for the lo...
