"First" JCPenney Catalog
Found an interesting site with what I'd guess is the first JCPenney catalogue from 1963 (after they took over General Merchandise of Milwaukee). They were barely integrated, with no apparent crossover between stores and catalogue (the locations listed were old General Merchandise catalogue stores, n...

Re: List of Detroit area Kroger stores in 1984
I saw in one of Kroger's media guides in the last few years where they cited their competitive position in each MSA in which they operate, and recall seeing that only in Detroit and LA (of places of any significance and where they had a significant presence) were they not 1 or 2, specifically citing...

Re: "Kroger Premier"?
This was a quick and dirty emulation of A&P/Farmer Jack Food Emporium, which they brought to Detroit in some of their upscale stores. The Bormans (former owners of Farmer Jack) were pretty well ensconced in the wealthy Detroit circles, so had some good locations ready to upgrade to Food Emporium...

Re: List of Missouri and Illinois Kroger stores from 1979
An update--Crestwood Plaza, which was a superregional mall which closed finally about 10 years ago after limping along, was scraped about 5 years ago (looks like a big prairie) and has had several fits and starts about redevelopment, has finally had something announced--Dierbergs and one of the loca...

They are starting work on the condos--it's changed developers (again) to Toll Brothers.

Re: Detroit Sneak Preview
In the inner ring Oakland suburbs, there were a number of National supermarkets which went in roughly in 1960 which were pretty cookie cutter--barrel roofs, diamond signs, edge of town (at the time)...there's one in Algonac (granted that's not an inner-ring suburb), but also Royal Oak (Crooks/Webste...

Re: List of Detroit area Kroger stores in 1984
22555 Greenfield in Southfield was superseded by a store at 227xx Greenfield, which was further just closed a couple months ago and replaced by 26200 Greenfield, a demolish and rebuild of a KMart. I've not driven by to see if it's a Marketplace or not. This is a heavily Jewish area, so may well have...

Re: List of Detroit area Kroger stores in 1984
Regarding 16919 Kercheval in Grosse Pointe--yes, this is a downtown store, parking in back, demolished and rebuilt as a Fresh Fare within the last 5 years. Kroger has retained a real lock on the Grosse Pointes, and they've gradually consolidated their stores in the Pointes, Harper Woods and southern...

And this store closed in August, 2020. We drove through Weirton returning from a Labor Day weekend in Pittsburgh, and the store had literally closed the week before.

Hinky Dinky and Supermarkets Interstate
I hopped down a rabbit hole and found something interesting--apparently Hinky Dinky (chain from Omaha) has their employee newsletters digitized. I'm intrigued by one aspect of their business--they figured out in the 1960s how to expand by leasing the food store operations for discount stores which w...

Re: NEW: St Louis, 1933-1975
Grew up in St. Louis during the 60s/70s. This is good info. From the above, I am not sure whether there were any K-Mart Foods in St. Louis, though Allied sold off Bettendorf Rapp in about 1970, plus was a relatively upscale store (they had unusual typography in their newspaper ads, for example)which...

Re: Lansing, MI chain history 1925-60...with some caveats
There was an A&P in Charlotte until at least 1985--inline in a strip center right where I-69 ended and diverted onto Lansing Road--I'd stop there for milk when returning to MSU after a weekend trip.

Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992
I lived in Johnson County/KC twice--from 1965-1967 as a toddler and from 1989-1992 as a young adult. In the '60s there was a Centennial A&P on the NW corner of 95th/Antioch in Overland Park which was where my mother primarily shopped (became Aldi in the 90s)--I remember smelling the coffee being...
