Re: FARM FRESH SUPERMARKETS IN NORTH CAROLINA

Farm Fresh operated a store in Elizabeth City, NC from at least sometime in the eighties until 1993. They returned in 2004 with a 'new' store carved out of the former Kmart on Hughes Boulevard, later adding an attached gas station the next year. As far as I know the two stores were the only ones in ...

Re: Anybody Want to Buy a Slightly Used Kmart? (Bellevue, WA)

Was the addition to the right once a Kmart Foods? Looks like an early seventies store, so would be in the right time frame...

Re: Chains with two stores very close to each other

Food Lion locations in Elizabeth City, NC about half a mile apart. One on the left was built in 1990, the right, probably in the early seventies and was originally a Colonial/Big Star. Ironically, the older one remains, while the other one moved late last year several miles south to a new S/C across...

Re: Old Golden Corral buffets

Golden Corral started out in Fayetteville, NC and is now headquartered in Raleigh. However to the above question, I don't know when they started to expand out West.

Re: Old Golden Corral buffets

One REAL oddity was Ankeny, Iowa, a 1982 build that burned down in 2000 or 2001. The franchisee actually convinced Golden Corral to let them rebuild the original building design. Wouldn't it be nice if retailers would bring back some of the classic retro designs that made their stores or restaurant...

Re: W T Grant

This store was one of the large Grant stores that was supposed to be 'just like Sears'. We had an auto service center, an interior decorator and sold appliances and furniture. We once had a W.T. Grant in Elizabeth City, NC that later turned into a Roses discount store. Roses kept and converted the ...

Re: Strange (very small) Kmart format

I'd be willing to bet that this Kmart has a store number in the 9xxx format. The 9xxx stores were 40-60k square feet, and mostly built in small towns with populations of 25,000 and under. That's right. The Cody, WY Kmart had no food service of any kind, nor a pharmacy. As with all other Kmarts, the...

Strange (very small) Kmart format

On vacation to Yellowstone, I encountered this strange and extremely small Kmart in Cody, WY. Apart from the minuscule size, the building was also constructed out of corrugated steel and with a sloped roof giving it a structure not unlike an oversized utility shed. The interior was dark and lonely, ...

Old Golden Corral buffets

Anyone remember the Golden Corral restaurants circa 70's through early 90s, with its Wild-West style exterior (and interior with prominent fiberboard ceilings) as well as signage font? It would be interesting to see if any of these survived the 90s and 2000s remodeling campaigns and still exist as G...

Didn't some supermarkets install movable blinds to keep out the sun in the afternoon, that is, before blocking them off with sheetrock became popular?

Re: Old Department Store Restaurants

I know that this topic is mostly about restaurants in real department stores, not discount stores, but we once had an actual sit-down restaurant (not a cafeteria like K-marts once had) at the Roses store in Elizabeth City, NC. I think that this was probably the first and only one that they operated,...

Re: Safeway Europe and Australia store brands

There is indeed Safeway here in Australia (I'm currently studying here for one semester) and it is under Woolworth's Ltd, but not nationwide. Safeway only exists in Victoria, apparently due to past naming conflicts in the other states or territories. Alas, Safeway will cease to exist in the near fut...
