Seems like it had to be a Safeway... wonder when it closed. Odd lot placement for a Safeway, surprised they accepted being hidden from the street the way the store is.
Safeway had a unit that was open throughout the years at 115 Addison (still open as an independent).

Re: What was this originally? (San Bernardino)
Housed two local chains starting about 1952: originally Owen's Market (and yes, the apostrophe is where it's supposed to be) and Pix Markets (early 1960s). It was a furniture store and a paint store after that and had numerous other grocery and non-grocery tenants. (All per newspaper archives,) Tha...

Re: Walgreen Agency?
There was a Walgreens in Sacramento in Country Club Centre in the 1950s; I've seen a photograph of it. I think it was torn down to build the Montgomery Ward which is now Walmart; it was right next to a 3 square pylon tower Lucky that was in the spot Walmart is in now. Oh I meant in the more recent ...

Re: What grocery store was this? (Modesto)
Lucky got all the way down to Madera before selling the central valley to Save Mart in 1997. Lucky "kept" stores in Tracy (may have been under construction), Sonora, and Lodi (was also a recent expansion) in 1997. Albertsons had a somewhat scattered but odd central valley presence from the...

Re: Walgreen Agency?
One of the few times I found a Walgreens that looked interesting enough to take a photo of. This was in San Jose. It may even still be there. WalgreensSanJoseSarat.jpg Looking at it now- wondering if it was a former Sav-On. I believe the Albertsons that was in the center at the time was a former Ral...

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
The Rancho on 900 W was right next to a Rite Aid. I bet this was a Safeway/Super S combo decades ago. Found another former Safeway, located at 2040 S 2300 E. Became a Fresh Market, now a Macey's. Looks like Albertsons gave this a Grocery Palace remodel. I think the Albertsons in Jackson, WY was a S...

Re: Safeway, 30 Chestnut Avenue, South San Francisco
With the planned Safeway rebuild at the Spruce/El Camino White Front site (which had a store from about 1987-2014), I'm wondering how much longer the Chestnut Avenue store will hang on. I hope it sticks around for a while more as it has done decent business for a long time and isn't really near any...

Re: Rocky Ford, CO - Safeway
La Junta is probably the last example of the italic wall letters interior now. The building is somewhat strange and I think it has been expanded multiple times into its current odd form. It feels quite large. Not sure if there are a few other Marketplace interiors still sitting around somewhere. I c...

Re: Walgreen Agency?
Not to say that there weren't "agency" stores on the west coast (there probably were)but Walgreens actually had "regular" stores in San Francisco in the 1940s and a pretty big presence in Northern California at least by the 1960s. They had 5 stores in SF in 1962 and 11 by 1978. ...

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
Fresh Market (former Albertsons) at 1638 S 900 E was a Safeway. Rancho (former Fresh Market, former Albertsons) 140 900 W was also a Safeway. I believe Albertsons bought 9 stores from Farmer Jack in Salt Lake City area. Between Albertsons new stores/capex throughout the 90's plus closures by Superva...

Rocky Ford, CO - Safeway
There is a grocery store in Rocky Ford, CO that is clearly a former Safeway. Beyond some wood paneling over the meat department there isn't much left of Safeway in this store from the looks of it. The wall decor has obviously been re-done, and I am pretty sure the floor has been re-done too. This is...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites
Jack in the Box is in Charlotte, NC. I wonder if that is a long-standing market or a recent expansion. Locations don't exactly look new, despite some efforts with paint.

Re: Smith's/PriceRite/Food4Less Las Vegas
Excellent work, all - I've added it to my Kroger spreadsheet. As of 2021 store #571 is still bannered a Price Rite - for anyone in the know, does that store still operate under Price Rite standards? I'm not sure how to answer this question. The store runs Smiths ads, bags, receipts, etc. Has for th...

Update- 4701 4th St. Lowe's was converted to a Food King Cost Plus unit. Conversion was just made and they are having a "grand opening" right now. So still open, and part of the Lowe's chain, with the Cost Plus 10% format.

Re: New location list: Albuquerque, 1929-1959
What about the Lowe's Market Marina at 4701 4th St. NW in Albuquerque? I can't tell if it is still operating as a full line grocery store but appears to be operating in some form. It seems to be off the Lowe's Market.com website.. but they still appear to have an open gas station in the parking lot.
