Re: Supervalu Lucky
The Vegas stores in storewanderer's photos are all 1998-99 era Luckys that became Albertsons-Savon for a few years then switched back. The one in Alhambra CA (1000 E Valley) is a former Shopping Bag/Fazio/Albertsons Grocery Warehouse/Max Foods that became a second-class Lucky, warehouse style. The m...

Re: The Big Yellow House restaurants, California
The Monrovia Big Yellow House had their fixtures auctioned in 1986. The address 725 Huntington corresponds to Albertsons. Since it was a restaurant, they obviously had to demolish the building to rebuild as a supermarket.

Re: Lucky/American Stores merger
As part of the settlement with the Federal Government, American Stores had to sell or close the following: - the entire Alpha Beta division (Alpha Beta, Skaggs Alpha Beta, Hy-Lo/Skaggs Drugs) - selected Lucky stores and the non-food assets of Lucky Stores Inc - Rea & Derrick Inc (northwest drug ...

Re: Max Foods Montebello Closing
That conversion to a new Savon Drugs may be likely. Recall the CVS next door to the new Albertsons was the old Savon Drugs. As part of the original sale of Albertsons Inc, Supervalu Pharmacies Inc (the drug division that oversees all banner pharmacies) acquired the in-store pharmacy operations of Al...

Re: West Covina area grocery history
I'm currently expanding the list and planning improvements to this thread. As for the previous question, Smiths Food King was acquired by Lucky in 1983-84 at around the same time Kroger sold its Market Basket division. From my research, the following were pre-merger SFK's existed in the area: 18730 ...

West Covina area grocery history
I am currently using the LA Times archives to do a historical study of selected chain supermarkets in the West Covina/Rowland Heights vicinity. Cities of my study include West Covina, Covina, Diamond Bar, Walnut, Industry and the unincorporated county areas of Valinda, Rowland Heights, Bassett, and ...

Re: BUFFUMS--Southern California
The Pomona Buffum's is is actually one of the larger buildings (perhaps the Library Building) on the campus of Western University of Health Sciences , a graduate medical/nursing university. The tall sign that says "Western University" is probably the old Buffum's sign. Back in 2005, the Un...

LKS Products Inc
Dean, "LKS" is short for Lucky Stores. The Knott Ave DC also served as the Socal division offices for both Lucky and Savon Drugs as well as the managment for Lucky Savon combo stores. Dublin was a DC and the third California DC was in San Leandro (NorCal offices). Knott had a large lecture...

Another name for "Markets Inc" was "LKS Products Inc, Dublin CA" LKS distributed to Lucky and its subsidiaries products of these brands: Harvest Day, (later version) Lady Lee, and a generic yellow label. In the mid 1990's, LKS used "Lucky Stores Inc, Buena Park CA" and ...

Claremont Albertsons-Savon labelscar
Yesterday, as I took my Toyota for service at Claremont Toyota next door to the vacant Albertsons-Savon, I noticed a "Lucky" labelscar rather than an Albertsons-Savon. How could that happen since Albertsons took over the stores site since the 1998 merger ("wedding")?

Covina (Citrus Ave) Ralphs as a previous Alpha Beta
The Covina (Citrus Ave) Ralphs posted their new state tobacco license on the door of their cigarette case. It is listed as: RALPHS #625 ALPHA BETA COMPANY This store was historically an Alpha Beta (the giveaway clues are the streetside H-sign and a 1990's labelscar under the Ralphs oval. I believe R...

Is it true that the Food4Less in Pico Rivera (store 336, 8620 Whittier Blvd) was once the site of a Ford Motor Company facility that moved from Long Beach in 1957? The 1.3 million square feet plant housed the Ford's West Coast Headquarters, Lincoln-Mercury regional offices, and Ford Galaxie/Mercury ...

There's already a post on Ralphs, but I did forget about Kroger owning Market Basket in SoCal. Also, don't forget the standalone drugstores that are now legacy banners: - SuperRx/Hooks Krogerclerk, did Gene Maddy Drugs have other locations and how long has Kroger owned GMD? There is only one locatio...
