Re: Monterey Park's historic store sites
Jeff, It is a Chinese-Vietnamese supermarket somewhere between Nicholson St and New Avenue on Garvey. I believe it is at the corner of either Orange Ave or Moody Dr. The eastern part of the city was also served by the Alpha Beta in Rosemead on Garvey and Jackson. Lucky and Albertsons served the Pomo...

Monterey Park's historic store sites
Today, I visited two long time stores in Monterey Park today: - Shun Fat Supermarket (SF) (Atlantic and Emerson, part of historic Midwick Hill at the border with Alhambra) - former Alpha Beta . An earlier post mentioned the building's opening sometime in late 1947 after the former Midwick Hill Count...

Sears and Kmart next door to each other
The West Covina Kmart (I-10 exit West Covina Parkway) will now have a corporate sibling store adjacent to the Kmart. Sears Outlet is moving in the former Safeway Liquor Barn/House of Fabrics/Joann space on the left side of Kmart facing the Los Angeles County Library building. This is a great supplem...

Re: Older Kmart interiors (orange and otherwise)
Orange is the new Sears type theme.
Some stores still sport 1970's/1980's signs. Diamond Bar has an old "garden center" sign adjacent to the Purrfect Auto Center.

Re: Montgomery Ward Locations-Southern California-1960s & '70s
I don't know if Wards Covina contracted their Auto Service Garage. Years ago, Kmart sold their Auto Centers to Penske. Later on, several Penske shops were sold to Purrfect Auto Centers (e.g Diamond Bar, Covina). Sears stores own their Auto Service Garages (West Covina, Industry).

Covina Ralphs (Former Alpha Beta) to close May 18
The Covina Ralphs on Citrus Ave will close May 18 due to lack of business, according to yesterday's SGV Tribune and Kroger. This is the store I mentioned in a different post that it still has 1990's era Alpha Beta interior decor (and its liquor license still uses Alpha Beta Company as a phantom stor...

Re: Fedco
Forgot to mention in the earlier post, Ontario also had a Fedco/ARCO gas station in the parking lot. If any of you drive by (60 Freeway at Archibald), you can examine how the City of Ontario completely renovated the store to be Police Headquarters. The main building still looks like the old Fedco bu...

Re: BULLOCKS--Southern California
Jeff and Dean, FYI: The Broadway/Sears site in West Covina was an Alpha Beta prior to mall construction, opened in the mid 1950's and closed in the early 1970's to make way for the mall. It was the first AB in West Covina, and later, Amar-Azusa opened in 1973 and closed after 1995. LATimes articles ...

Fedco Locations - what are they now?
Current use of all former Fedco locations, all closed after it filed for bankrupcy and sold all their assets including all store sites to Dayton Hudson Corporation (now Target Corporation): 2534 S Archibald, Ontario: Ontario Police headquarters (acquired from Target after being vacant for about 3-4 ...

Re: Montgomery Ward Locations-Southern California-1960s & '70s
I visited Covina when they had their liquidation sale (under the more simpler/modern Wards name) and the store was old fashioned (exterior and interior stuck in the 1960's) and the only modern thing was the Auto Center. The place was a mess - mostly bare walls, very little merchandise left, customer...

Re: Rite-Aid Sign Replacements for Acquired Chains
The Rowland Heights store (Nogales and Colima), Diamond Bar (Diamond Bar at 57 Freeway) West Covina store (Amar and Azusa) both sported old cursive-style Thrifty logos inside the store in the form of aisle signs or wall labelscars (as in "Thank You For Shopping at (oval labelscar)" for at ...

Re: Any old Stater Bros. Photos?
Advice: Contact the Stater Bros corporate office (phone number at http://www.staterbros.com) and if they're nice, they might let you visit the office (now at the San Bernardino International Airport) and view some pictures. The most unusual architecture is their roundish teardrop-like modular store ...

Re: Zody's
Drove by the El Monte Santa Anita (adjacent to El Monte Airport) store last week on my way to the LA County Arboretum - exactly the same look as the Bakersfield site pictured above, now painted dark blue (Sam's Club). Valley TV next door (don't know if that was part of the original Zody building) ha...

Re: CA Big A/Drug Emporium/Drug Barn
The Covina location ( Drug Emporium , Grand Ave at Covina Blvd) was an Alpha Beta. It was one of 3 Alpha Beta stores located along Grand (one was at Arrow, the other was at Badillo). The pharmacy most likely could not compete with the neighboring Savon (inside Albertsons). UPDATE: Drove by a few day...

Re: Ralphs Marketplace
The first Fresh Fare store opened in about 2002 in Manhattan Beach and is first concept store in the Kroger operated Ralphs era. It competes directly with Bristol Farms (then stand-alone, now part of Albertsons/Supervalu. Not sure about Ralphs located in former Lucky stores. Examples of the 3 format...
