Re: Great Scot Supermarkets/Perloff Brothers-PA/NJ
Hi,I vaugely remember when i first came to this market with Quaker Oats , old timers mention Perloff Brothers and Great Scot Stores.I believe they had gotten out of the retail supermarket supply business around 1980. They stayed around for a few years as Tartan Foods a food service provider with a ...

The Perloff Brothers also supplied Genuardi Supermarkets Inc. from 1968 to 1970, and they provide to Genuardi their Store #5in Yeadon, which was only open from 6/10/1969 to 1972

Re: Did Cheltenham Square ever have an A&P, Acme, Food Fair?
Does anyone know if Cheltenham Square Mall on the edge of Philadelphia ever had either A&P, Acme, or Food Fair? Currently it has a ShopRite in the former Gimbels building. I believe the mall officially is in Cheltenham (Montgomery County, PA) but right over the line with Wyncote (Montgomery Cou...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
The FF/PP in the Cherry Hill Mall was located near Strawbridge and Clothier. I think after it closed it was a sporting goods store for awhile. With all of the reconfigurations that mall has gone through over the years it is hard for me to say where exactly it was today. An interesting story about t...

Re: Sears sign oddity
The now-demolished Sears that was at 63rd and Market Street, in Philadelphia, PA and Millbourne, PA, had the cursive logo on the very top of the building, so it can be seen from the PRT/PTC/SEPTA Market Frankford Line that next to it.

Re: Bradlees/Walmart
Kind of odd the Fairless Hills one was replaced by BOTH Giant and Wal-Mart. There was no Bradlees in Fairless Hills. The Giant and now-shuttered Wal-Mart replaced the former Penn Fruit Company store and United Artists-Eric Fairless Hills 3 Theatre in Fairless Hills. The closest Bradlees to Fairless...

Re: Early 90s-build Kmarts with auto centers?
Of the many Kmarts that are near me, the only one that I know that had/has an auto center are: 197 West Street Road, Feasterville, Pa (1970's Kmart) 1776 Lincoln Highway, Langhorne-Levittown-Middletown, Pa (1970's Kmart) 1837 Street Road, Bensalem (former J. M. Fields/Food Fair-Pantry Pride combo st...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
Alpha Beta/Skaggs Alpha Beta carried a generic line called "EconoWise"...the label was white with red and black lettering. I remember canned goods, black pepper, and paper products were available....probably more items too. It was ECONO BUY. The ECONO BUY generic brand was also carried at...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
I was just looking on Historic Aerials.com and it looks like that if there was a supermarket at Plymouth Meeting Mall, it would have been added after the mall opened in 1967. It looks like where the office building at Plymouth Meeting Mall is was a different building that was in front of the Cinema ...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
Interesting! Around when was that? And what is the Plymouth Meeting store? By the way, there was another Food Fair in Cherry Hill all along. This was in the "Ellisburg Circle" shopping center built in 1956. The store had their trademark tower and arched roof, which are both still used by ...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
The supermarket that was located within the Plymouth Meeting Mall was a Food Fair later converted to Pantry Pride. I think but I'm not positive they closed it in the 70s before the chain went bankrupt. I worked for the company in the late 60s and by then they had soured on the idea of stores within...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
Acme #1558 was located at 1305 West Main Street, Norristown, PA. There was another Acme #1755 but the only address I have is W. Germantown Pike, Norristown , PA. Wow, so the current U-Haul building on Main St was originally an Acme? I always thought it was the original location of the first full-si...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
The original Food Fair at 6601 Roosevelt Boulevard was located close to the road. It was probably built around 1950 with the classic brick Food Fair tower. It closed around 1970 and sat vacant for awhile. When FF announced plans for the new store the neighbors were initially not happy because they ...

Re: Acme and Philadelphia area shopping centers
Thanks again for the info; I hadn't been to historicaerials.com before. It really is amazing; it even looks like the A&P had a Colonial front at one point! I also discovered that the Acme at 6601 Roosevelt Blvd in northeast Philly was actually a newer construction; the Food Fair that was origin...
