Former Alpha Beta, 520 Workman Mill Road, Bassett, CA
This site may be a time capsule all of its own. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2416/2258285077_0a21e41a27_m.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/socalretail/2258285077/ Not only does the outside look very much like it did in the Alpha Beta era... so does the inside. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2045/2...

Phoenix Area Gemco stores
I've managed to positively identify and photograph two out of the four Gemco stores in the Phoenix valley. There's the converted Gemco - Target in Tempe, AZ at 1818 E. Baseline Rd. (NE Baseline & McClintock) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2239/2159645782_0d862370d9_m.jpg http://www.flickr.com/ph...

Albertsons LLC Closing 4 Phoenix Stores
See: http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/0108ar-albertsons0109.html I have interior and exterior pictures of the Ahwatukee store on my flickr page. They are of cellphone origins since I don't take a real camera with me to work (and work is the reason I am in AZ to start with.) The store is/wa...

Re: RIP CompUSA 1984-2008
I can state that the Cerritos Good Guys store became a Superco, without an intermediate stop at CompUSA. I've never been inside that store, but it was built near Fedco (redeveloped to Target.)

Maps.live.com has a west image showing the BigK sign with a Savers (the thrift store operation.) Makes for interesting cotenants.

I can't help with old pictures, but if there are any pictures in my flickr collection that you care to use, let me know. (I'm posting this publicly to prod others with extensive photo collections to also share...)

Re: Stater Brothers - Whittier Bl, West Whittier
Stater does appear to work within the confines of the stores they've inherited... even the extensive remodeling underway in Downey (or seen finished in Cypress) pretty much left the store set the way Albertsons had it. At the former Albertsons in Downey, the perimeter departments didn't move, except...

Re: Stater Brothers - Whittier Bl, West Whittier
Actually, Stater Bros. didn't even paint many of these stores in the first 5 years. The colors used in the repaints are recent selections. I think Stater Bros. has very carefully selected which properties to spend capital in -- and from my perspective they've made some very wise choices. Nonetheless...

Re: List of defunct retailers of the United States
Gemco belongs on that list somewhere, but it wasn't really a "warehouse club" ... maybe as a discounter?

Re: Williams Brothers
I was in San Luis Obispo 1994-1999, and I recall Vons opening their new store. The old "south" store was 3600 Broad St. I'm guessing it was a Williams Bros. based on its age, and the fact that I saw shopping carts mixed in with the Vons ones at this store. It was a standalone store, somewh...

Re: Gigante History
The Anaheim Gigante is the second tenant in that location, Orchard Supply Hardware occupied the spot in the late 90s. (Yes, OSH was the first tenant in the new building.) Trivia: If I recall correctly, the Mervyn's building is original to the Anaheim Plaza, while everything else was razed and rebuilt.
