Are they still called Hypermart USA's or are they Wal-Mart Supercenters now in name? Some Wal-Mart Supercenters are around 250,000 sq. ft. already, the earlier ones were larger than the current ones. Wal-Mart isn't building any above 210K sq. ft. now, but their earlier stores were close to the 250,0...

The candy counter, as well as toys, HBA and stationery were all removed from Sears throughout the 1980's. Of course, toys returned in 2002 from KB Toys, and remained in a larger presence in 2003, Sears dealt w/their own toys in 2004, and had toys from Kmart upon the merger for 2005 during the Christ...

The Kmart that opened here locally in Cumberland, MD in 1981 had a Delicatessen in the front and a Cafeteria described like the others in the back. It had a cafeteria until about 1998, when that area was then used for sporting goods, then turned into a stockroom in 2000 during the Big Kmart conversi...

Does anyone have any pictures of old Target interiors? My first visits to Target were in 1989 as they were inherited Gold Circles in NC, and for their own built stores, 1994, when they first opened in the Washington area. I don't know much of what old Target looks like, although old Wal-Mart and old...

There were 3 Eckerd Drug chains: one that started in Erie, PA, one that started in Wilmington, DE, and one that started in Florida. These all ended up together eventually. The Thrift Drug chain mentioned before was headquartered in the Pittsburgh area (JCP bought that chain in the 1960's and expande...

While this I have noticed with Service Merchandise and Best, there were Service Merchandise stores in Virginia. Manassas had a Service Merchandise (now a Dick's Sporting Goods, I believe), so did Woodbridge near Potomac Mills (unsure what it is now), and there was one in Chantilly (now a Lowe's on t...

In the new "War of the Worlds", you'll notice a bag of groceries with a box of cereal. You can pick up a Stop N Shop label on one of the boxes at the top. Nice attention to detail being that the movie was set in NJ outside of NYC.

While both chains had similar facades on stores, and there are examples of A&P architecture in the Mid-Atlantic resembling this, if you'll notice, the elongated middle section for signage to me indicates Winn-Dixie here, not A&P. A&P, while having this architecture, had a smaller area in...

Hypermart USA was a Wal-Mart experiment in the 1980's that was done in Kansas and Texas, and it failed. It was the precursor to the modern Supercenter. Big Bear Plus would be another example of an early supercenter concept, as the store sold both food and general merchandise (although not nearly in ...

SuperTarget is all run by Supervalu in the food areas, which would lead me to suspect that Archer Farms/Market Pantry merchandise is the same as Flavorite/Richfood brand merchandise sold at Supervalu chains here in the Mid-Atlantic. David's right on Gold Circle acquiring Richway (When I moved to NC ...

Ingles was a chain that started late (in the 1960's), but I'm not sure if their orange and yellow stores (the ones they're most famous for) are acquisitions or not. I'd have to do research on Winn-Dixie in Western North Carolina, but I don't believe they divested any stores in that region in the 60'...

The 1999 swap mentioned in the Triad region of North Carolina was between Kroger and Harris Teeter. It got both chains an increased foothold on their respective trade areas, and limited the playing field. Kroger left the Triad region of North Carolina, selling their stores to Harris Teeter, with Har...
