Went into Casey's in Winslow, the former Safeway. It seems to be a pre-Marina design, the arch is not as pronounced as on a Marina store (and the clock from Safeway days is still on the back wall!) Casey's is an interesting store in itself, an old-style hardware store with a little bit of everything...

That Safeway was built in the late 70s-early 80s. It was a replacement for a 50s style Safeway in downtown Winslow that is now Casey's Color Center. http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&rls=HPIA,HPIA:2006-06,HPIA:en&q=casey%27s&near=Winslow,+AZ+86047&cid=0,0,2294633599352140877&ll=35...

TG&Y was one of the "second tier" of variety stores, they were based in OKC and had stores allover the West. In a number of markets they had the larger "family centers", which had electronics, records, and books in addition to the regular dime store goods. In the 80s it was b...

Montgomery Ward in Oklahoma City had gas at their tire and auto center.....seems like it was called "Riverside" gas, or something like that. Also, JC Penney had at least one store here that sold gasoline.....Penncrest, maybe? I've seen a photo from 1965 with the name "Blendomatic&quo...

Revco's lone outpost out west was Arizona-under the name of "Revco Drug Centers of the West". Apparently they had greater ambitions than just AZ (there were a few stores in NM & CO). They entered AZ by buying the Ryan-Evans chain in the late 60s-their stores were equivalent size to wha...

Yellow Front was started in Phoenix during the 50s as a Army surplus/sporting goods chain (their stores had - of course - "yellow" fronts). In the 60s and 70s the chain added clothing and auto supplies and expanded across the Southwest and West - mostly in small towns. Checker Auto sprang ...

Re: Hughes La Habra

I remember seeing ads for Hughes/El Rancho Markets, but ours was just plain Hughes. Never did see the El Rancho locations. Hughes bought El Rancho in 1979. The El Rancho locations were in Arcadia, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Irvine, Laguna Hills, and an area of Newpor...

BTW, Sacramento was the home of the first McDonald's franchise, I believe. This was the first franchise that the McDonald brothers sold, several years before Ray Kroc was in the picture. It was located on Fruitridge Avenue near Stockton Boulevard. They tore down the original (very much modified) bu...
