Re: Food Basket (Division of Lucky Stores)-San Diego Area-1959

Food Basket was Lucky in all but in name. There was an existing Lucky Market in SD before Lucky entered the market. The stores were rebranded to Lucky in the early 90's

Re: Vintage Supermarket Music

Vintage music (Muzak?) is still alive and well at Walgreens...there is more 50s-60s music played over the intercoms there than on most oldies stations!

Re: OT: Gas Stations

The truck stop operation actually began with Pure Oil, which was bought by Union 76 around 1965. Pure was a major operator of auto/truck stops in the Midwest and South, Union expanded the concept to its own marketing areas. In 1970 the Pure brand was finally replaced by 76 and the auto/truck stops e...

Re: Blythe CA

It is odd that Wal-Mart has not entered Blythe (a city of around 10,000)-an understored, isolated town. The closest big city is Yuma.

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

It was a brand of soda in various fruit flavors (I think the usual citrus varieties, plus maybe cherry) with a "dairy" base. Kind of like a carbonated melted creamsicle in a glass bottle. It was around in the mid 1970's--about the time I graduated San Jose State and moved back to Los Angel...

Re: Eckerd's "leapfrog" development

Eckerd expanded into Phoenix and Tucson just before the CVS takeover - CVS moved into PHX the same time Eckerd did. Some that were under construction as Eckerd opened as CVS. When CVS acquired the Osco stores here, several of the former Eckerds near the existing Oscos were closed.

The Sizzler sign on Beverly Blvd though is still there, and they have PODS located still in the parking lot. I don't know if they are planning to reopen eventually or if this is permanently clos...
