Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
Maybe someone more familiar with Grand Union and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre region could fill us in. I lived in the area from late 1966 to mid 1980 and I can't ever recall Grand Union even having one store in the area. The major players at that time were Acme, A+P and Giant Markets. I'm not even sur...

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
Since I have more time, a little background about those two former Grand Union locations. The first one (Save-A-Lot in Fort Plain) actually survived every wave of GU closings and was bought and run by C+S Wholesale as part of the bankruptcy auction. I'd say it stayed open for maybe a year or so befo...

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs
The Gloversville Loblaws is a building I pass to and from work every day. It closed in 1975 and I still shake my head as to why the signage was never taken down. Also a quick aside about the Grand Union in Northville. Did you take a look out by the back dock and see the old GU "Clean, Fresh and...

Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV
In response to this post : I noticed in the A+P photo it said Plaid Stamps in the store window. Were they still giving them in the time frame of the era? As I recall (mind you I was only 6 or 7 seven at the time), A+P never offered Plaid Stamps in the areas I was familiar with at the time which wou...

Re: Great American Stores Upstate NY
According to today's local paper, the Fonda, NY Great American will be closing its doors in about a week or so. Store was originally a Victory Markets and had been there forever. Surprised it lasted this long considering its size but it was the only full service supermarket in town. Closest Great Am...

Re: Great American Stores Upstate NY
Somebody help me here and correct me if I'm wrong but the more you think about things, the more you remember. If I remember correctly, Victory operated at least one store outside New York State. It was located in Stroudsburg or East Stroudsburg, Pa. and originally opened as a Victory sometime in the...

A+P Clinton, NJ
Was headed from NJ to Pa. via I-78 this morning and happened upon this store off one of the exits. Any history on this place? The exterior looks kind of run down and the interior was kind of "tired" looking. Was it a new build initially or did A+P take it over at one time? Interesting thin...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on
Yes, that was the only Loblaws and only store I ever saw this system at. And the more I think about it, they opened a new store in Amsterdam, NY (maybe 10+ miles or so from Johnstown) earlier in '72 and that one didn't have it and maybe around '74 or '75 they built a replacement store in Gloversvill...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on
I've only seen that in action in one store in my lifetime. It was at a Loblaws in Johnstown, NY which opened in 1972. Basically it was a pretty simple conveyor system located in back of the checkouts. They had hard plastic green bins which were numbered. Your order would be bagged as normal and the ...

Re: Great American Stores Upstate NY
I can recall Great American in at least two other former Shop-Rite locations as well: in Colonie, on Wolf Road directly across from Colonie Center mall and in Glenville, along State Route 50. The Colonie store is now a Bed, Bath and Beyond and the Glenville store became a Hannaford. Shop-Rite pulled...

If indeed that lady was correct and the store opened as an A+P in 1969, is it possible it could've been another chain prior to that? Any Centennial new builds I've seen never had that kind of a roof design being rounded toward the rear and flat in the front. I'm thinking it could've been an Acme pre...

Actually, there were three A+P's in Upstate NY that I know of that were open after the timeframe in question. There were A+P Super Food Marts in Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake until at least mid-2000 or so both of which are now gone and there is a still operating A+P in Margaretville which is located ...

The first known (to me) Shop-Rite in NE Pa. was in Eynon, Pa. which is between Scranton and Carbondale on US Route 6. That store opened I'm going to say sometime in 1980 in a former A+P which opened in either 1974 or '75 and closed sometime in 1979. It closed sometime in the mid '90's and was replac...
