Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips

Does anyone know about this place ....we had one near my home as a kid but it didn't stay open very long. It was build with a Mr. Donut, which closed along with it. It was not in the greatest of locations. I can't believe I've ever even seen another one. It was a "Long John Silver's" kind ...

Man, do the words SKY CITY take me back to childhood! The Anderson, SC was HUGE and always busy. It was a cheap-end discount store. My older brother worked there for a time in the pet department as a teenager and we'd go there to visit him. Outside there was always a singing family or a revival goin...

There was a Grant's in Anderson, SC at Watson Village. It was huge and seemed to stay around a long time. It was far away from the main commerical area of town and the influence of K-mart. It slowly died (like all of them) and the building is now a local hardware store. Reminds me of Murphy's which ...

...it looks like the fate of most vacant grocery stores falls into a few certain categories: a start-up church, bingo parlor, discount funrniture, flea market, gym or Big Lots.

Walgreen's HQ is just north of Chicago, where they started. Their website has a pretty good history, focussing on the early days. As I recollect, one of their major expansions came thru buying a lot of the Midwest Rexall drugs in the late 70's. Wasn't Rexall a chain that partnered with people (inde...

Bob Ingles, the owner of Ingles out of Asheville, NC, has been in a lot of their commericals. Bi-Lo had an "invisible spokesman" named Walter, who was supposed to be their produce guy. You never saw him, only his hand or something. They always said, "Our produce is better because of W...

It seems like I remember something called American Fare (or Fair ...along those lines) in the early 80's. It was a large super store which was rumored to be a K-mart experiment. I think I remember one on Stone Mountain Expressway outside Atlanta. Any ideas?? Kmart's first few "hypermarkets', o...

You want "sad muzak??" Here in Romania we hear 80's US pop tunes in the open air former communist markets, filled with old, tired women trying to sell their produce. The other day I heard Blondie's "Call Me" from American Gigolo there ....You always say, "what's wrong with t...

That's right about Phar-Mor on Haywood in Greenville ....it is now a furniture store ....lots of those sitting empty too, like the Grand store on Laurens Road. Never really did Phar Mor much but it was all the rage there for a while. Some places seem to really go like crazy until the novelty wears o...

There are lots of old grocers that are now gyms or fitness centers scattered around South Carolina. A little different, but a free-standing Belk store closed in a shopping center in Laurens, SC and it is now offices for Palmetto Bank. Unfortunately, the old small Ingles at Anderson Mall is now a bin...

REMEMBER WHEN BI-LO (IN CAROLINAS) HAD THE BIG COWS??

When Bi-Lo first started in SC, the stores had these big larger-than-life cows on top. It was a huge deal in our home for students from a local university to steal them as pranks. Everybody would find them in unusual places! Any memories of this?
