Walter, as you mentioned, was really not a Bi-Lo concept, but an Ahold concept, still used today in the Giant-PA division, and since they have inherited much of the ideabase, I would assume Tops as well. That reminds me of their commercials featuring their former company President Alan Noddle, and c...

Supervalu has a great network for supplying independent supermarkets affiliated to them w/food. However, Supervalu has never taken on anything as large as saving Albertson's. I remember throughout the 80's seeing many stores under the Supervalu banner in rural Illinois, and they were identical to Co...

I've watched some Food Network shows recently, and we can determine a few things... Paula Deen shops at Kroger (Quality Guaranteed w/an oval above on Cream was the giveaway), the show is based in Savannah, GA. Michael Chiarello shops at Safeway (Jar of capers w/Select on it). This show is based in N...

David, you'd be referring to Odonna Matthews, the old Consumer Relations head of Giant Food, who was seen in many Giant commercials, especially before the 1998 Ahold buyout.

I doubt this is relevant, but the only Uni-Mart I know is a Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain that's pretty inferior to most Mid-Atlantic offerings these days. I doubt there was any connection.

I would assume this CA Miracle Mart has no connection to the Akron, OH based chain of the same name, that once operated throughout the Midwest (As well as in Western MD). As for American Fare at Kmart, it was their store brand, after the Fleming bankruptcy, then they went to Red & White, then to...

The H-T logo changed sometime about 1996-1997 I think.

I know the last time I was in NC in 1994, it was the old logo still. When I'd meet H-T again in Northern VA in 2003, they had this new logo. Research indicates about 1996-97 though.

The Richmond MSA would consist of (I'm assuming) Richmond City, Henrico County, Hanover County, Chesterfield County, Goochland County, and the county Petersburg is in (the name escapes me), and maybe Caroline County.

Wasn't there also a More-Value discount store chain connected to H-T?

I was just in Richmond a couple weeks ago, and I'd say it's probably decaying more than thriving. I got into Downtown Richmond, and if not for VCU, Broad St. would have been completely lifeless. Richmond in a lot of ways reminds me of Pittsburgh, an area that isn't growing at all. It seems like ther...

I believe someone told me their stores went to H-T. While I used to be quite familiar w/Charlotte in the late 80's, I hadn't been there since 1994. I remember when Bi-Lo, H-T, A&P, Winn-Dixie, Food Lion and Kroger were the supermarkets of Charlotte. Hannaford hadn't yet arrived, neither had Wal-...

I agree. I had not been in an Ukrop's until about 10 days ago, and I went to 5 of them. I was amazed at the presentation level from such a small chain (more refined than Kroger and other larger chains), the selection, layout, service, and the prices were a lot better than I expected from them. If an...

Iowa as many of the Plains states are a mystery to me as to what chains operate there. It's usually smaller chains (ones we know nothing of out here in the Mid-Atlantic)....but Iowa, Des Moines specifically, Dahl's, Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart?

Safeway here in its Mid-Atlantic stores are mainly with 90's interiors. I can find a few old 80's interiors around, some got remodeled into the 2000's interior as shown, and a few now are lifestyle stores. Since we have a lot of Westerners here, figured I'd provide some insight on what seems like Sa...

What is the name for the new logo? From the pictures I've seen, I really like it. I haven't seen it on a store yet in Safeway's Mid-Atlantic division.
