Re: Walmart in-store restaurants
Are you familiar with the "Wal-Mart Cafe" (or maybe it was meant to be read "Cafe Wal-Mart") concept? The WM in Aston PA, which was built as one of the last Caldors in 1995, becoming Wal-Mart in 2000, had a very small snack bar by this name. It had a fancy black/tan color scheme ...

Re: Walmart in-store restaurants
The Super Kmart in Uniontown PA still has a locally-owned restaurant (I forget the name) inside it! Did a lot of Kmart snack bars once have their own entrance, but eventually make it an emergency exit (at least if the snack bar closed)? Seems like this happened at the Brookhaven PA store. Very stran...

Re: Possible former Albertsons
I understand the area is high crime, but this center was built as urban renewal. Pak n Save is the only "no name" store in the center, albeit owned by Safeway. Didn't Safeway have a high-end format (in Baltimore/DC anyway) called "Marketplace" in the 90's? Because of that it seem...

Re: Possible former Albertsons
Is it possible it was remodeled around 2000? The decor it has now is similar to but different from what most Genuardi's had as of 2001. I'm not sure if this Genuardi's decor was added by Safeway or not though.

Possible former Albertsons
Was the "Pak n Save" (owned by Safeway) in Emeryville an Albertsons? The store is at 3889 San Pablo Ave. I suspect it was built as an Albertsons around 2000 but was sold to Pak n Save in 2002. This store's ceiling design, including its white fire sprinklers, make me wonder, but the decor i...

Re: Supermarkets on 60 Minutes CNBC
This might not count, but until a few years ago, the oldest A&P by far was way down in New Orleans in the heart of the French Quarter. This store opened in 1931 and was sold to a local chain called Rouses around 2008. And this store along with a few modern A&Ps in the area kept the A&P n...

Re: Leesburg, VA Safeway with circle S signs
Did Safeway used to have more stores in rural Virginia that are now long gone? Could this one be an "orphan" or something? I would guess it was a circa 1965 store, considering the rare trapezoidal Pizza Hut sign frame (with current logo) down the road.

When could this photo of the Newark DE Acme have been taken?
Yes, the old one which is long gone and is now a Rite Aid. Here is the photo: http://www.dda1.com/photos/retail/parkshop_big.jpg I can't see any of the cars here up close, and I can't tell when this style of store was built. Not sure when it closed either but the Rite Aid there is pretty old. Why th...

Re: Could this Acme (Mantua, NJ) have been planned as a Safe
I checked a property tax assessment database, and it implied that a certain Safeway like this that was later AppleTree and has been abandoned since AppleTree closed in 1993 (in Houston of course) was built in May 1983. Could that have been a mistake? Perhaps they meant 1973?

What was this older empty supermarket near Atlantic City???
Type "6718 Black Horse Pike, Egg Harbor, NJ 08234" into Google Maps. This is the address of a Pathmark. But look at the smaller building to the left across the parking lot. It looks so familiar and there is no question it was a grocery store (not sure how I can really tell). The place has ...

Re: An Old Philadelphia Acme
You mean the Acme glass tiles, minus the Acme wording? If so, I saw the same thing happen to the old Woodlyn PA Acme back in 2007 when it became an "Amelia's" discount grocer. And I never even knew that building was an Acme until then! What I don't get is why Amelia's has let Bottom Dollar...

Could this Acme (Mantua, NJ) have been planned as a Safeway
This store: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_246OMBI86f8/TPbY0njX3eI/AAAAAAAAF5w/ctPDMxhJHSE/s1600/acme_style_mantua_01.jpg Because it doesn't look quite like any other Acme, and reminds me of this Safeway design: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16441604@N07/4120633523/ Safeway had stores in rural Pennsylvani...

Why do RICH towns have so many obsolete grocery stores?
Has anyone noticed this? Acme/Super Fresh on the Pennsylvania Main Line (Philadelphia metro area), A&P in northern New Jersey (New York suburbs), and Safeway in parts of San Francisco are examples of that trend. I guess Whole Foods and similar chains (which often have small stores by chain stand...

Re: Loews Theatres 1905-2006
When was that theater (pictured) built? And why did General Cinema always use that "Western" lettering? That seems so ironic considering you can't find a much more "urban" institution than GCC.

Evolution of Acme (vs. other chains) in shopping centers
Is it just me or did Acme wait until late to really accept shopping centers? Seems like most of the first A Frames (built in the early 1960s) were by themselves in downtown areas, with very small parking lots. By contrast, the bulk of A&Ps built in the 1950s were attached to at least one other s...
