Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
Another one from Saginaw, surprised I didn't list it already: Fort Saginaw Mall, which has been abandoned for about 15 years now, opened with a Kmart/Kmart Foods at the south end and Federal Department Store at the east end. Behind Federals was a Giantway. So there you go: Two grocers in the same ce...

Re: The first store that got me interested in old supermarkets
My first grocery store was a small local operation about a half-mile from my house, called Jim's Market. It closed in 1991, a year after Spartan Stores opend a Glen's on the northern end of town in a woefully under-developed plaza (land cleared for an Ames that never came to be, plus a poorly-access...

Re: Kohl's Supermarkets in the Chicago Area
There's a sporting goods store on Grand River Ave. in Okemos that has that *exact* building style; same color and everything. I can tell it used to be a grocery store because the sign still has a figure of a lady with a shopping cart. No idea what chain would've used such a figure.

Re: Sambo's Restaurant Locations in California
I'd be interested in finding any more Sambo locations outside of California. So far in my home state of Michigan I've found four.

Re: Sears and Kmart next door to each other
I'm pretty sure I've seen Kmart and Sears Dealer stores next to each other at some point. Irongate Mall in Hibbing, MN apparently had these two stores next to each other (or very close) at one point.

Re: Older Kmart interiors (orange and otherwise)
I don't remember our local Kmart (opened ca. 1985) ever being orange. Then agian, the store was expanded by 1991. I do recall that it had the black/red department signs until about the mid 1990s, however. If I recall correctly, they went to a white on red department signage for a while as well. Last...

Re:
Per my new telephone book, there is an Arthur Treachers still in operation in Dearborn, Michigan. I just recently purchased a new digital camera and will hopefully have a photo soon. Sorry to tell you, but the Arthur Treacher's in Dearborn is no more. This one was inside Fairlane Town Center, but i...

Re: Arbor Drugs - freestanding locations
Almost every Arbor Drugs I remember looked like picture #1. There were two in Bay City, MI that looked just like that, both opened around the same time. I'm pretty sure they made the transition to CVS/Pharmacy, albeit briefly; one is now a carpet store, and one's a Dollar General. I'll try to get a ...

Re: Nanuet Mall (Nanuet, NY)
Looking online, I can tell you that these are some original/early tenants: *Friendly Restaurant *Zippy's *Jo Anne's Nuts *Carriage House Restaurant *Hungry Lion Restaurant *Fanny Farmer *Aladdin's Castle *Burger King The Sears store also had a cafeteria, which evidently became Herman's Sporting Goods.

Re: Northern Michigan A&P's
I know this thread is quite old by now, but what the hey. West Branch: This town too..... West Branch indeed had an A&P; it was a Colonial style building. I seem to remember it having an aisle that actually dead-ended! This store later became an IGA; currently, it's been subdivided into Family V...

Sorry for the double post, but here are a few more chains I know of that had their locations spread about: * Zody's: Briefly ( very briefly) operated in Michigan through acquisition of Yankee, way outside Zody's main market of Arizona, California, and New Mexico * Turn Style: Had locations in Illino...

One chain that was rather oddly dispersed until recently was Mervyns. Their operations were mostly in the West, but they did spread out to Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, as well as a handful in Michigan and Minnesota (the MI and MN stores evidently a result of Dayton-Hudson acquisition). The FL lo...

Most Zayre stores I've seen were more rectangular: wider and not so deep. You say there was once a mall there? Could it have been a Woolco? They often had small malls attached, and something about the indentations in the facade looks a little Woolcoesque to me. It could very well have been a Woolco...
