How about Sunshine Bakeries products? I have a friend that is upset that Hydrox Cookies are no longer avaliable. Ah well. Some of the Sunshine products are still around, but not Hydrox. Sunshine Bakeries used to be part of American Brands with American Tobacco, Jim Beam, etc. An old family friend w...

The Big Boy franchise history is pretty interesting. There are others, like Shoney's, that dropped the Big Boy affiliation long ago but still survive, like Eat 'N Park out of Pittsburgh. Roanoke, VA was even divided into two territories, split between Lendy's and Yoda's. Richmond was Shoney's territ...

Cyclamates were great. No calories, no aftertaste, and killed mice with cancer. I remember the brief shining moment when Funny Face, Tab, Diet Pepsi, Diet-Rite Cola, and others all had cyclamates. I don't think any artifical sweetener has ever beat cyclamates. There's a company in Virginia Beach tha...

Maybe. Safeway had a store or two in Rocky Mount before they went to Nags Head. So apparently the few NC stores were associated with Richmond rather than Norfolk. Any idea if Safeway ever had a Tidewater presence? I'm thinking there may have been some discussion on this in the past, but I can't fin...

A lot of people from the DC area go to the Outer Banks. This may have been a attempt at capitalizing on this, as part of a long-term strategy of moving beyond Richmond. Chains often have gone into or stayed in resort areas that ordinarily wouldn't have made sense from a short-term business model--G...

Safeway had one store in Nags Head, NC on the Outer Banks that was pretty isolated by anyone's standards at the time it opened (as I recall in the early 1980's). Where exactly was this Safeway and do you know what it is now? The architecture of 80s era Safeways suggests that the store might be Seam...

As long as we're talking about the Arby's sign, does anyone know if the "IS DELICIOUS" sign was the original? The reason I ask is that all of the remaining "hats" in Richmond say "IS DELICIOUS" - some are early stores, some not so early. At one time, some of the Arby's ...

Completely off the subject, but I wonder how many former Ramada Inns there are renamed "Armada Inn" after they lost their flag.

This is getting off the subject of Pavillions, but in the original thread I began on Safeway International, I asked how many Safeway International stores there actually were. So far, all that anyone's been able to say are two locations - F Street in DC and West Cary Street in Richmond. With two loc...

Safeway in NC

Safeway had one store in Nags Head, NC on the Outer Banks that was pretty isolated by anyone's standards at the time it opened (as I recall in the early 1980's). Sometimes you don't have to go too far as the crow flies to make a big leap in terms of entering a different market. Ukrop's has one store...

Maybe it has something to do with now parent company Safeway's International stores, predating pavillions by some 20 or so years. Wasn't Pavillions created though before Safeway got its ownership stake (in the midst of selling its SoCal divisions to Vons)? As for the International concept...I do wo...
