Re: Kroger in England, AR

The store facing extending in front of the walkway reminds me a lot of the Kroger on 10th Street in Indianapolis that closed recently.

Thanks guys! It's always helpful and interesting to read your comments and deductions. (I also posted a reply to the Kroger-in-Wisconsin issue here...)

Re: Kroger stores in Wisconsin?

Replying to krogerclerk in the West Virginia thread ... Now that you're in Wisconsin, it's time to sleuth for old Kroger locations, not exactly sure of the date Kroger exited Wisconsin, but I would guess close to the 1971-72 time frame for Chicago's divesture, so no superstore or greenhouse prototyp...

Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia

Last week, I was poking around the Kroger corporate website and came upon their "grocery retail locations" page, which stated that Kroger operated 46 stores in my old home state of West Virginia. That figure worked out to a rate of less than one store per county. I became curious: Where ex...

Re: Abandoned A&P, Mid-Cities Mall, Manitowoc WI

On a second look the facade appears original, as the center doesn't look touched in several years(read decades). The concrete facade indeed hasn't been touched since 1968, and it covers the entire mall; including the anchor stores. No doubt the supermarket was designed to "fit in" to the ...

Abandoned A&P, Mid-Cities Mall, Manitowoc WI

Here in Manitowoc, there is an abandoned shopping center known as the Mid-Cities Mall, or (by its later-period name) Lakeview Centre. The mall opened in 1968...and like a number of other early malls , it included its own supermarket. I took a handful of pictures of the mall a few days ago: http://fa...

Re: Safeway in Arkansas

Welcome! What a heart-warming story. I'd love to see some more pictures.

I confess that I've never yet actually been inside a Safeway store, but I do have a fondness for the marinas. They were the most futuristic, distinctive, and well-proportioned supermarkets of all time.

Re: Thrifty Junior Drug Stores

I wonder how small the Thrifty Jr. stores were? A smaller "sub" format seems to have been a common thread among quite a few chain drugstores. Out east, SupeRx operated a few "SupeRx Express" pharmacies that seem to have been located chiefly in small towns. (Cue the scan from the ...

Re: Kroger closing 1958 store in Indiana

When I passed through Indianapolis two weeks ago, I decided to check out this store to see what had become of it. As it turned out, the location is currently being used for Teacher's Treasures, a nonprofit educational outfit sponsored by the Kroger company. The sign now looks like this: http://farm4...

Mystery store: 4033 Rhodes Ave, Portsmouth (New Boston), OH

On my last road trip from Wisconsin to my hometown in West Virginia and back again, I passed this store along the way; distinguished by its gable roof, faux chimney pylon, and incongruously large tacked-on Family Dollar sign. It has the look and feel of an old supermarket to it. http://farm4.static....

I noticed that Dave at Pleasant Family Shopping put together a great piece on Kroger Family Centers yesterday; complete with background information and a set of exterior and interior photos from 1968-69:

Re: Fas Chek (Kroger?), 1415 Dunbar Ave, Dunbar WV.

I can actually pinpoint the day the Dunbar Village Shopping Center superstore opened for business (and, presumably, this older store closed as a Kroger): Tuesday, December 4, 1973. I just happened to come across and save this brief article when going through Charleston, WV newspaper microfilms a yea...

Re: Road Trip Photos

Excellent photos! Charleston, WV is pretty close to my old stomping grounds, and no doubt there's a lot of interesting supermarket artifacts in the area to be mined. I wish I could help out with identification; though without firsthand knowledge or a directory on hand it's hard to say. Could the flo...

About what period would that decor date to? The 1970s?
