Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
Although I cannot figure out how to post an image from Newspapers.com that allows one to zoom in, I think I figured out a way to share a link which allows one to view an image or article (and enlarge it) properly. Great that you provided these, but for the record the links only work for those who h...

Although I cannot figure out how to post an image from Newspapers.com that allows one to zoom in, I think I figured out a way to share a link which allows one to view an image or article (and enlarge it) properly. In 1977 and 1978, a number of ShopRite newspaper ads listed all of the chain's locatio...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
There actually was a ShopRite in the town of Chatham proper, which was located at 393 Main Street and opened on June 6, 1956. It does appear that there was quite a bit of time in between the closure of that ShopRite and the opening of the Chatham Township ShopRite. I did not research whether the 393...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
Back to the Netcong ShopRite, I previously mentioned that the interior has been updated over the years. However, one element in the interior is almost certainly original: the signage on one of the walls of the liquor department. If you enlarge the third photo in Zachary's profile of that supermarket...

Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
Though I am not sure how often I will have a chance to update this thread, I would like to have a thread devoted to historical information on ShopRite locations (past and present). I think a good place to start is with the ShopRite of Netcong (in Morris County, NJ). This supermarket opened on Septem...

Re: A&P stores in Maine in 1990s
From the portion of the A&P that was visible in the photo, the store's exterior looked very unusual; in fact, the best way I can describe it is that it looked like the A&P was on the bottom level of a house. (On the upper level of the "house," there were windows and there was sidi...

Re: A&P stores in Maine in 1990s
Look for the site of Calais alumni . org - Calais is a small town in Maine that fits the original poster's description (it is actually a small point of ME surrounded by New Brunswick on 3 sides), and would be a logical routing from Bangor into Canada as the poster suggested. The site has some photo...

Re: A & P's on Cape Cod, Mass.
Great site -- I just discovered it this weekend. In the early 1980's, I was employed at A&P #191 in Mattapoisett, Mass. (near Cape Cod). At the time there were numerous A&P stores on Cape Cod, announced by a memorable sign at the Buzzards Bay rotary ("A&P on Cape Cod" with sto...

Re: Last A&P (Under that Name) to Close in Pennsylvania
Not sure about Mount Pocono, but the North Towanda A&P closed on 12/10/94, a little after Lehighton. Thanks for your informative response. Regarding the Lehighton A&P, there are some interesting bits of information which I either overlooked or did not previously mention, courtesy of article...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P
The think these 4 A&P 's are now the oldest A&P still opened. they all started out as early 1950's Arch roof A&P's that later got a front remodel into the "Centennial/colonial" design. They are: 289 Bergen Boulevard, Fairview, NJ (A&P Food Market) 507 Prospect Avenue, Litt...

Last A&P (Under that Name) to Close in Pennsylvania
Most of the A&P supermarkets in Pennsylvania which were still open as of January 1, 1982 were either closed or converted to Super Fresh during 1982 and 1983. But some PA stores continued on with the A&P nameplate. A February 11, 1985 newspaper ad in The Pottsville Republican listed the follo...

Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar
Very sadly, the Centennial A&P in Morristown, NJ will close at the end of 2013. It will be replaced by a Whole Foods in 2014 or 2015. I highly doubt that the building's exterior will look the same once it becomes Whole Foods.

Re: A+P-110 Washington St., Morristown, NJ
This is devastating news, but I have just found out that the Morristown A&P will close by the end of 2013 and be replaced by Whole Foods in 2014 or 2015: http://morristown.patch.com/articles/whole-foods-coming-to-morristown Given how old the Morristown store is, I knew its days were numbered, bu...

Re: A+P-110 Washington St., Morristown, NJ
The AcmeStyle webmaster has now posted an excellent article (with interior and exterior photos) on the Morristown A&P at the following link: http://acmestyleblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/morristown-nj.html#comments . Also, there are a few more things that I want to add as well: First, this store's c...

Re: Former Shop Rite Morristown, NJ
As somebody who lives right next to Morristown, I can say with 100% certainty that there used to be a Shop Rite in town. However, it was not on Speedwell Avenue, but rather on Lafayette Avenue in the same building where Staples currently is now. This Shop Rite closed in 1993, and I believe that it o...
