Pay N' Save in Arizona is a concept discount store owned by Checker Auto(CSK)....they are super tool stores (like Harbor Freight) but also have pet supplies, sporting goods, and a lot of "closeout" items. They seem to be a reincarnation of the Yellow Front chain (the Pay N Save logo is yel...

It seemed like Safeway was the "king" of private store brands - Cragmont, Par, White Magic, Scotch Buy, Mrs. Whites, Crown Colony, Lucerne, Busy Baker..etc

It may go back to when the big chains started as tea merchants - A&P, Kroger, Jewel. Their original business was selling their own teas and spices. On private brands, many of the store brands are made by the same companies that make the name brand products. Or by large mfg companies that special...

Grants was the first (around 1975) to go to "dime store heaven"..and Grant City was basically their last gasp to compete with KMart. Remember these long gone 5&10s? Rasco; Sprouse-Reitz; Cornet; Kress; McClellan's; T G & Y; McCrory's. One of the survivors is Duckwall-Alco, which is...

Stater Bros in the OC

I noticed a Stater Bros store in Buena Park. (in Orange County - which is a distance from Stater's base in the Inland Empire) It had the older style rectangular free-standing signage with the Art-Deco style Stater Bros lettering - so this store must have been there a long time. The question is - was...

It was a "Pay N' Takit" which was an Arizona chain that was bought by Safeway in the 1920s-30s...this was Safeway's entry into AZ. I imagine it closed down when Jerome lost most of its population when the mines closed (early 50s)-the closest Safeway now in down the hill in Cottonwood

All I know is that if you own a piece of vacant commercial property, it's usually very good news to hear that one of the large pharmacy chains is interested in buying or leasing your property. I've s...

Freestanding Osco's used to have a heck of a lot of food, altho I don't recall what they had for dairy.

In fact several freestanding Oscos in PHX call their food depts "Albertsons Mini Markets"!
