Here's an article from 7/21/1997 that briefly states that the Safeway on North Shoreline Blvd was expanding at the time. Scroll down to the subheading of Bailey Park Center. Per the same article, it looks like Safeway was (as of 1997) no longer an anchor of the Walgreen's shopping center I mentioned...

The former marina Safeway (now TJ Maxx) is at 472 center st. in what is now Moraga. This is just a little street that runs through the shopping center. The shopping center itself is at the intersection of the main roads Moraga Rd. and Rheem Blvd.

This could have been any of three. There was one from 1959 at approximately 1919 W El Camino Real and Clark ave. that opened in 1959, and closed at some point, and at least part of the space is now a pet store. The space has been drastically remodeled. There was also one from 1966 at about 141 E El ...

The book Industrial Design, Raymond Loewy shows a night time exterior photo of the Loewy-designed Lucky in San Leandro. There's also a great close-up photo of the interior, looking from the rear right towards the left front of the store. Of course, the book is avalable on the big online retailers, b...

Orinda Lucky's

Continuing from a previous thread, where was the original Lucky in Orinda, CA and what became of it? All I know of it is from reading a 1954 newspaper article stating that it would open soon at such and such address that I don't remember. Also, when did the replacement Lucky at 27 Orinda Way (that w...

The Safeway in Moraga, CA received a lifestyle remodel, but says "serving Moraga since 1965". This seems like the correct date for this exact store (and not just the date Safeway entered Moraga), since there was also a Safeway (now a TJ Maxx) from 1962 in Moraga.

The Foodville was originally a market from the early 1940s, and was under a different name that I can't remember. There's an old newspaper article in a frame in the back rear of the store, where the butcher department meets the produce department that gives that information. After doing research wit...

Yup, the San Carlos store looks to be taken over by Foodville, as they have signs in their current store soliciting applications for employment in their new location. An employee also told me that they were moving to that location sometime in the fall.

Judging by a satellite view of the Safeway at 4860 Pecos st., I think it's from the 1950s.

I'm pretty sure it closed midnight on July 9. Then, employees packed up the remaining merchandise for transfer to other stores. The building will then be gutted and subdivided to accept a Trader Joe's and various retail shops. This Safeway seems to have been extremely modern for 1951, with exposed s...

former safeways in the S.F. bay area that became drug stores

Does anyone know of any former Safeways from the 1950s or 1960s in the San Francisco bay area that became drug stores? I know of a Walgreens at 3434 High St. in Oakland that was a Safeway from the 1950s, and one at 301 E 18th St. that used to be a Safeway from the 1960s. There's also a Longs Drugs a...

The Safeway opened November 29, 1967. Even the restrooms scream '60s, and the doors to the women's and men's restrooms are labeled "ladies" and "gentlemen". There is also original wood paneling in the butcher room and the stairway that leads up to the restrooms, and the stockroom...

Probably. A satellite view on <maps.google.com> shows what looks exactly like what would correspond to the roofline of the shopping center in the picture, including the Safeway building having a gabled roof and being deeper than it is wide. A view from <maps.a9.com> shows that the facade of the form...
