Re: Acme in Franklin Lakes, NJ?

Re: Honeydew Markets-NJ

Hi, This was a small regional chain that I remember as a kid in North Jersey. The origins had some thing to do with management from Penn Fruit. The stores they had in Bergen County were in Paramus. River Edge( was a Shop Rite for many years afterward), New Milford ( purchased by its Deli manager and...

Re: Why has Acme closed so many stores (over the years)?

Hi, Historicaly, North Jersey Acmes were always treated by the company like red headed step children.A lot were tired small relics like Lodi, Teaneck, Cliffside Park and Paramus. Some from the 60!s like Montvale and Washington Township never did any business but went on to do well for many years as ...

Re: Acme in Pottstown and Boyertown, PA

Hi, I been in both these stores. What I have heard was that the landlords had decided to double the rent. With limited volume it is tough to make a profit under those circumstances. It!s a shame both were fine examples of an A Frame and a time were a customer could tell one chain from another from t...

Re: Acme Whippany

Hi Bob, I guess I was in some Acme that was close to that location. By the way could the store that closed in 63 be the same unit in the Bank photo in question. I know that Acme ran a lot of old small store at that time Cliffside Park and Leonia come to mind. Gerry

Re: Finast/ First National (the Pick N Pay, Pre-Ahold years)

Hi, Yes I knew about Edwards history and you are correct that for what ever reasom First Nationals strongest Market was in Connecticut and in Westchester County NY. I think the problem was that Finast never could figure out what they did so well in that area and so bad in New Jersey and New York Cit...

Re: What exactly is (was?) a Pathmark "Super Center"?

Hi, Pathmark sold more GM then other companies in Ny at the time. (Yes including small appliances) also had the departments that we have become use to but were not every where on the NY scene. Its funny but most retailers today do not sell as much GM today then they did twenty years ago. I guess a c...

Re: Finast/ First National (the Pick N Pay, Pre-Ahold years)

Hi, My dad managed for Finast in New jersey and in Ny State. I was a Produce Manager with them and also was a part time kid. At the time of the purchase of Safeways Ny Division, Finast was way behind Safeway in all aspects of Supermarketing. Highly sucessful in Connecticut and in West Chester County...

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area

Hi, Actually to be historiclaly correct, the Fresh New Stores of the 90!s were built by Albertsons. Prior to that Acme ran a combination of new stores and a lot of older smaller stores. Not to go beyond the historical and into store operations I would love to discuss this in the retail operations we...

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area

Hi, Yes, Giant started to hit the suburbs of of Philadelphia about the late 80!s. They really did not make their move untill Fleming went belly up. They stated to buy up many of the leases of the Thriftways and built new stores at many of their locations. Thus came the end to many former A&P, Fo...
