Re: Mayfair Markets - Geography and History

I'm not how many stores it would have added to the count below, but I believe that the Market Basket stores in the Seattle area (the ones associated with Marketime Drugs, which later was merged into Fred Meyer) got converted to Mayfair some time around 1970 or so. I know of 3 Mayfair stores that wer...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

Although it's not grocery store related, when I was digging through some newspapers this evening I came across an article in the Bellevue American microfilm that might be of interest in this thread. It's an article from October of 1972 about the first computerized cash registers (an NCR 280 system) ...

Re: PayLess Drug Stores

I know that a number of the Payless stores that were in the Seattle area before they were acquired by Rite-Aid had at least portions of the store decor that were carryovers from the Pay 'n Save stores, and in some cases these even lasted for several years before modern Rite Aid decor was applied ove...

Re: Two chains, same name, same state

As far as I am aware, there have been at least four different chains in different times and different places that have used the name of "Market Basket": One in the Seattle area that was affiliated with Marketime and was eventually absorbed into Fred Meyer with them, the Kroger-affiliated o...

Re: Picway Shoes

They came to the Puget Sound area around 1987. Many of them went into new strip developments that were being built at the time. I couldn't find an example of their logo online, but it was a rounded multi-colored letter "P" that had a tail that extended from the loop. I recall the interior...

Re: Former IHOP locations

Nice find. I checked the Seattle locations (I'm not that familiar with what's on that side of the lake) and found: 950 E. Madison (Capitol Hill listed as 905 E. Madison on the 1967 list, but that was probably a transcription error:) Still operating as an IHOP. Bing Maps link 4301 Brooklyn Ave (Unive...

Re: Ellensburg WA Safeway 1965 Open

I have seen ads for Safeway Super Stores in some of the early 80s papers (1982-1983 or so) but I can't be sure that particular store was one of them. I do know the Redmond/Overlake store was a superstore, and I believe there were a couple others. I'm guessing that the Marina Safeway that used to be ...

Re: Coco's returns to it's classic logo

I don't even think there are any of these left around here anymore. The one near here has already gone through two other failed restaurants (Black Bear Diner and some sort of Mexican place that lasted all of six months) since it closed down a few years ago.

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what type of systems Price Club (one of the precursors to the current Costco) used back during this timeframe? For several years during the mid to late Eighties, I remember that the store we occasionally went to in Albuquerque had a system where the cashiers ...

Re: Ellensburg WA Safeway 1965 Open

Just looking through the headline database of the East Side Journal (Kirkland's former newspaper,) it seemed that every 7-10 years Safeway was moving to a new location there. Eventually they settled down into their current mid-Nineties freestanding location and have stayed there since then.

Re: Albertsons Logos Through The Years

Another 1960s photo of an Albertson's in Bellevue WA: http://content.lib.washington.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/imlseastside&CISOPTR=406&CISOBOX=1&REC=1 This one had the red Western-style logo at the time, so I would assume it to be an early 60s store. The store is actually still ...

Re: Former IHOP locations

There's one former IHOP in Bellevue WA near the corner of Bellevue Way and Main that is now occupied by a Korean restaurant. It appears to have been built sometime in the mid-1960s, and shows up in some 1969 photos in the Eastside Heritage Center's collection. Google Maps link There's also another o...

Re: Lucky Stores in Washington

Crossroads in Bellevue also had a Lucky store which had been through a number of previous iterations as a grocery store before that, including Market Basket (part of Marketime Drugs, which later became part of Fred Meyer,) Mayfair and Big Bear, then a 1990 map shows a store called Market Place (Prob...

XXX Root Beer Drive-ins

One of the more (historically) interesting restaurants to be found around here is the last remaining XXX Root Beer drive-in found in Issaquah WA (the website can be found here , but note that there's auto-playing music on it.) Apparenlty the chain goes back quite a bit, and was at one point fairly w...
