Re: Detroit Sneak Preview
Was going to post this on my thread , but this will do. For when you add my Downriver communities lists, I have stumbled upon a Kroger that I didn't even know exist: https://www.flickr.com/photos/92760331@N04/48909673236/in/datetaken/ Southgate's very first Kroger store opened at 14803-14807 Dix-Tol...

Re: Detroit Sneak Preview
Amazing job! You've included the entire city of Detroit, and with the enclave cities and the Grosse Pointes too! You sure are accurate in how big Detroit was, as it reached a peak population of almost two million in 1950. I have a few additional notes for your consideration: *Detroit underwent a cit...

Re: List of Detroit Metro Packer Foods stores from 1964
Packer was basically KMart Foods without the KMart next door. This was quite interesting that you mentioned that, as the Garden City store was an outlot of the property containing a Kmart store - to be specific the very first Kmart. Quite odd that they didn't just put it right next to the Kmart its...

Re: List of Detroit Metro Packer Foods stores from 1964
Relating to Birmingham, I decided to open up a 1967 aerial image of this suburb and noticed a large enough building on the east side of Woodward just north of 14 Mile between Sheffield and Taunton Roads. After checking address ranges on a couple of nearby north-south streets, this completely confirm...

List of Detroit Metro Packer Foods stores from 1964
Last night, I, quite by accident, stumbled upon a lucky Newspapers.com clipping - from the Detroit Free Press of December 11, 1964 - of Packer Foods stores that operated in the Detroit metro area. Packer Foods was an older name that was resurrected in the early 1960's as the name for lower-volume Wr...

Re: Wyandotte, Lincoln Park and other Downriver burbs chain history
After another check of the Wyandotte directories on the Bacon Memorial District Library's website, I have revealed another ancient chain that may have been specific to this part of the Downriver area called Wolf's Cash Market, which was ran by a person named Joseph Wolf and had locations in Wyandott...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
I know, two-year bump, but for a good reason. Just a few minutes ago I stumbled upon a Facebook group post displaying this article from the September 16, 1959 Dearborn (Michigan) Press, concerning the groundbreaking of the Taylortown Shopping Center: 70891708_10120270951891804_2554709056614825984_n....

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
*25201 Outer Dr. in Melvindale apparently closed in the 1980s; it's not in a 1991 phone book of the area, and a Storetrax listing from 2000 just says it's a "former Kmart" built in 1967. It's now a megachurch. Yes, I know I'm quoting an almost-decade old post, but for a reason. This exact...

https://www.groceteria.com/place/us-michigan/detroit/dearborn/ http://www.andrewturnbull.net/artifacts/nat-midearborn19.jpg I also now know that this barrel-roofed National at 15219 Michigan Ave didn't even last to 1965 before being shuttered. And with a Kroger opening in the lot next door, it neve...

Mystery Store - 2004 East 4th Street, Royal Oak, MI
Here is an interesting discovery I came across on Google Street View just east of the downtown area of the northern Detroit suburban community of Royal Oak: https://i.imgur.com/kMgCC5M.png According to Southeast Michigan Council of Governments records, this building was built in 1920 and measures 1,...

Re: Toledo Sneak Peek
* As expected, there was a bit of chain crossover from Detroit...while Meijer didn't sweep in until after 2000. Actually, Meijer already had some Toledo locations by 2000. Here's the dates these stores opened according to a Meijer document that you can download from their vendor website: -Maumee an...

Re: Wyandotte, Lincoln Park and other Downriver burbs chain history
Don Gutz in the All Things Wyandotte Facebook Group has posted this image of a crowd gathering in front Big Bear store in Wyandotte: 68445849_920021108349386_5431557848888770560_o.jpg Was this signage style ever used by the Columbus-based Big Bear chain? Mystery Store - 15031 Middlebelt Road, Romulus, MI
Located diagonally across from Detroit Metropolitan Airport's property at Middlebelt and Eureka Roads: https://i.imgur.com/mhYtA2i.jpg Built in 1960 and measuring 4,600 square feet (if Southeast Michigan Council of Governments [SEMCOG] data is accurate), this is a small but reasonably sized building...

Re: Wyandotte, Lincoln Park and other Downriver burbs chain history
Added a couple of entries for Dix-Toledo in Southgate on the Lincoln Park list. Both are in the same strip mall, which was built in 1966 with a Bi-Lo (was this part of the Bi-Lo chain?) as well as a Topps discount store and a Jo-Ann Fabrics. Bi-Lo and Topps closed by 1975 and the complex started to ...
