When I was doing due diligence commercial property inspections, I found the best time to take pictures is after the morning rush hour and before noon on a weekday - preferably when school is in session. The guys who are just hanging out usually aren't awake then. The only time I ever got chased was ...

I've got a picture of the Jeff Davis one on the Old Richmond Grocery Stores website. It's now Big Apple Market. There's a fairly unaltered Colonial just up the street (Gene's) as well. I'm fairly fearless around most of Richmond, but it does get a little dodgy around the ol' Big Apple if you don't k...

I'm not a Californian either, but I would say that using the term "ranch" in this context is nothing more meaningful than a different way of saying "farm". It's just one of those regional variations. I've been doing some research on hotels and lodging that provides wonderful exam...

Re: Colonial Big Stars (Post 1960's-before A&P takeover)

I love all of the old pictures of the old Colonial/ Big Star food markets from the 50's and 60's. But I'm puzzled i've not seen any pics of (post 1960's) stores that they had, before they became A&P's. Also does anyone know/have any pics/ads of what the old Big Star logo looked like, both in th...

The Grocery Store (Farm Fresh)

Any of the "Jim and Kay" commercials. They were done by an actor and actress who in real life were named, well, Jim and K (real name, just K).

I thought of them when I saw K shopping in Ukrop's last week.

Around 6:30 a.m. EDT today, and the same error message yesterday around the same time as well. Whatever the problem is, it seems to be making forums I haven't visited as having been read by me, but that might be my imagination. And I got some sort of error message regarding debug and "banlist&...

David, I think going regional is a good idea because it allows the readers to home in on posts that are of prime interest. If regions ARE designated, it becomes an issue of balancing logical grouping along with the desire to create just the right number of regions, i.e., not too many and not too fe...

Did the banking industry change or has society changed? Something I won't try to answer, but many of the lower end customers from my experience felt as though they were "entitled" to skip out on payments because of the high prices and inflated interest. Sad, but it's a vicious cycle, that...

Even middle class people have bought furniture on time for ages and that's been a big part of traditional furniture retailers' models. Still, that model has been undermined by easy access to credit cards and they may have gotten more marginal buyers than they had had in the past. They clearly over ...

Heilig-Meyers - another large dead chain based in Richmond. My wife did work for them too. As the linked article points out, they still survive as The RoomStore. I believe they only changed the corporate name from Heilig-Meyers recently. The article seems to imply that Heilig-Meyers voluntarily gave...

I remember seeing the Northridge store on the news after the Northridge earthquake. It had received pretty major (and photogenic, I suppose) damage.

In Richmond, VA, The Village Shopping Center at Three Chopt Road and Patterson Avenue had an A&P and a Colonial (presently, the center has a Ukrop's that was built on the site of the old A&P - the Colonial site is a Blockbuster). The Richmond Shopping Center on West Cary Street had a Colonia...
