Re: Long's Drugs being bought by CVS and will disappear by 2009
Longs has a very unique store in the outdoor mall (which itself is unique, it resembles a European shopping plaza) in Downtown San Diego, the smallest Longs I've ever seen. I wonder if that one will close as well. I believe you're referring to the Longs Pharmacy in Horton Plaza. They use the "...

Re: Corti Brothers Sacramento, CA 60 days
What's surprising about that story is that the store is leased. I always assumed that it had been there much longer, and that it was family-owned. It is definitely a Sacramento area institution. Hope they're able to find a suitable new location ... there's a shopping center at the corner of Arden an...

Next on this list for expansion of the chain in this area is the Brea store. It will supposedly be a two story store (the first in the area that I am aware of) and will be located in the former Toys R Us building on Birch street behind the Brea Mall. Both the central Pasadena (former Robinson's) an...

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
re: Monrovia location That Starbucks is in the Pavilions shopping center. The whole center was newly built in the mid-80s, so I assume the original supermarket at that address was demolished. re: Arcadia location The CVS (formerly Sav-On) is made up of two adjoining stores, so it makes sense that it...

Re: Foothill Shopping Center, Azusa, CA
I drove by today and noticed that all of the in-line stores between CVS and the 99 Cents Only (formerly Alpha Beta) store had been torn down. I remember a few months ago that there were signs indicating a new Fresh & Easy was going in one or more of those buildings, but I guess I misunderstood a...

Re: Thrifty (and Other Rite-Aid Legacy Brands) Ice Cream
My office is about a block away from the Thrifty plant in El Monte. We keep hoping that there'll be a factory tour or at least an ice cream counter someday!

Re: Former Rockridge Payless in Oakland
I believe it was discussed in another thread, but prior to being a PayLess, it began its life as "International Super Store," an early discount department store. I remember shopping there in the mid '60s.

Re: A&P New Orleans French Quarter STILL OPEN!!
All the A&Ps and A&P-owned Sav-A-Centers in the New Orleans area were sold to Rouse's (a local grocery chain) last fall. The French Quarter A&P (on Royal) is now a Rouse's (I went there last week.)

Re: Covina Ralphs (Former Alpha Beta) to close May 18
The Alpha Beta that became a 99 Cents Only store is at Vincent and San Bernardino, not Badillo.

8450 La Palma, Buena Park: Walmart SuperCenter Unless they've expanded it recently and haven't updated their website to reflect it, the Buena Park store is just a regular WalMart, not a Supercenter. The Pasadena Fedco-to-Target was also a teardown and new construction (unlike the Robinson's-to-Targ...

Haggarty's - Los Angeles
The LA Times has a blog called "The Daily Mirror" in which they look at newspapers from the same day as the current date 100, 70, and 50 years ago (currently 1909, 1938 and 1958). I'm more interested in some of the ads than the articles they're discussing, and one in particular piqued my c...

Re: Nothern California "FARMERS MARKET" chain
There was a Farmers on the south side of Madison east of Auburn Blvd. And I believe there was also one adjacent to the former K-Mart (now Home Depot) on Howe and Cottage. It later became Farmers Liquors, and then CompUSA.

Bargain Basket, Placentia
I drove by this market (710 W. Chapman, corner of Placentia Ave.) yesterday-- it looks like it's straight out of the '50s. The name is painted (and outlined in neon) on the flat exterior in a script font. I found this picture on someone's Flickr page. According to this 2005 article in the OC Weekly,...

Re: BUFFUMS--Southern California
Don't forget Capwell's (East Bay) and Weinstock's (Central Valley), the other two Carter/Hawley/Hale chains that ended up being Macy-ated. Did Hamburger (predecessor to May-Calif.) have any connection with the Hamburger's clothing store chain (now defunct) in Baltimore? I always thought that it was ...

Macy's
If memory serves, Macy's had the following divisions in the 70s:
1. New York
2. Bambergers (NJ south to MD)
3. Missouri-Kansas (sold to Dillard's)
4. West (originally O'Connor Moffat in SF; San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Reno, Fresno, Modesto, Monterey)
5. Davison's (Atlanta)
