Re: Safeway 639 Port Angeles Lincoln Street
The original Lincoln Street Safeway in Port Angeles WA opened as a Marina style in the 1960's, this store included the popular "Snack Bar" that were found in many Marina style stores of the 60's, this store in particular was a high profit store from opening and always a apple in the eye o...

Re: Thoughts for the new year
As I have told you many times over the years, we all appreciate what you have done for this hobby in general. Of course, all things have to evolve, and I believe your site does so very well, and always seamlessly. I know I've learned much here as have countless others. So I won't say 'dont' change a...

Re: A&P/Eckerd Drung proposed merger, 1969
A lot of the Safeway stores in the Houston division had Eckerd stores right next to them or in the same shopping centers. I wonder if Safeway was also on that list... That was more of an Eckerd thing. In some areas, it was Safeway, in a large portion of the south, it was Winn Dixie (which, until th...

Re: New article: Krogering in Greensboro
It's always amazing to me how a company can last so long in a town, just to leave, then come back again under an acquisition, and act like nobody notices. (See Safeway-Randalls and Safeway-Tom Thumb in Texas for the book on how NOT to do this, by the way) That store at 2710 N Church looks very A&...

Re: Older Winn Dixie decor
Winn Dixie has been for a very long time a slow capital investor, which means that they invested very little into upkeep in their stores. I live in South Louisiana. All 10 of our local stores were recently sold to Brookshire Grocery Company to become Super 1 Foods. Of these stores, 9 remained open. ...

Re: Fayetteville, AR and the Frankenstein Safeway
I'm sure you know this, but the Market Street Safeway in San Francisco is a similar Franken-Safeway. There, though, they went with the rounded side to open up for the marina roof.

Re: Marina Safeway in Montana - anyone know which town?
Thanks for the info! Had some time today and found a second store with the same signage on it in Watertown, CT: https://goo.gl/maps/saij4XN3umQ2 I looked to find an accurate existing thread to switch the conversation over to but the closest one was a thread talking about interior Kmart signs. Actua...

Based on the road sign, I would say Eagle. Their logo was that shape.

Re: When Did K-Mart First Come to Portland, OR?
What about the Kmart at 122nd & Sandy (#4288)? Not sure what year it opened, but it is an older store... This store opened on 3/25/71. This is a very tough question: when did K-Mart first come to Portland, OR? The locations: *13750 S.E. Johnson Rd., Milwaukie, OR (opened c. 1968-70) *2315 S.E. ...

I'm thinking about subscribing to Newspapers.com again, and ran across this, in the Shreveport Times, September 28, 1961:

Re: Was "Kids' Kounty" a predecessor to Child World/Children's Palace?
I don't think so for two reasons: Child World/Children's Palace stores used different sized arches (one large, flanked by two smaller ones) in most locations, and they made up the bulk of the store's facade. Additionally, the article mentions ownership by Lachman Rose, who was still operating them i...

Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar
Zatarain's may have started as local to that area, but I've seen those in stores here in NY State so they have apparently spread out quite a bit. That is indeed correct. Zatarain's has spread out fairly well, but you'll see a lot more here than in New York state. Probably much more common in NJ due...

Also in Shreveport is Uptown Center on Line, whose pylon is shown here: Brookshire has been in this center for over 35 years, having recently expanded their store over half of the center. Brookshire claims to be the original tenant here, which would substantiate my claim that they were the death of...

Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar
What was bad about the location? I believe you, but do you mean "bad" in terms of crime or just not a good location for a supermarket? Personally I'm kind of astounded that the former A&P (now Rouses) in the French Quarter has survived as a grocery store for all these decades. A&P...
