Re: Gottschalks
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I actually visited the Lakewood Mall as the mall was being demolished, and remember going inside the Target store and seeing what looked like a closed gate that led in to the old mall, which was located to the right, just past the restaurant, which was common fo...

Re: Marie Callender's
Marie Callender's son Don died in 2007 and the obituary was run today in the LA Times. I guess the news traveled slowly. He died last week , reportedly because of injuries he suffered from a fall in 2007. I didn't think you'd be able to keep a death like that under wraps for very long... word would...

Re: Gottschalks
All of the Gottschalks in the Seattle area (acquired from the Lamonts bankruptcy in 2000) closed down several years ago, but I think there are still a couple of scattered locations in the outlying area (I know of one in Marysville, not sure about others.) There are three Gottschalks stores left in ...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
The stairs down to the lower level were right in the center after you entered the front door though. Is this typical for this style of JCPenney store? I think this is a fairly common design feature of many small and medium-sized "Main Street" department stores. The Kirkland building was b...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
Hmmm. The JCPenney at Tacoma Mall has a freestanding auto center nearby, I presume also Firestone. Yes... it is a Firestone. Here are a couple of pictures I took about five years ago, though it looks the same today: Looking south. Looking north. Here it is during the grand opening in 1965, complete...

Re: Fred Meyer Marketplace, Shelton, WA
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the QFC near Highway 16 was a old Bag N Save that was built by the Hogan family as was the QFC in Enumclaw. I thought that the Fred Meyer Marketplace in Gig Harbor had always been a Stock Market Foods. I do know that between QFC and Fred Meyer, Kr...

Re: Fred Meyer Marketplace, Shelton, WA
Saar's Market Place picked up many of QFC's ex-Stock Market locations over the years, including the S. 64th & Yakima store (originally the Hi-Ho Shopping Center, which evolved into Bi-Lo Foods), the Pearl Street store, the Port Orchard store (in the old Kmart shopping center on Olney Road), Buri...

Which one? The one in Kennewick or Tacoma?marshd1000 wrote:That is the first Safeway I remember going into as a child. My grandmother always shopped there as it was only 2 blocks from her house. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

Re: Kennewick, WA Former Pylon Safeway
It turns out the address is actually 114 S. Auburn St. The building was constructed in 1951 and is now occupied by the Builders Supply and Hardware Co. There is a virtually identical Safeway building at 215 S. 84th St. in Tacoma that was built in 1955. Safeway operated there through the early '80s a...

Re: three square sign, 1531 NE 145th st. Seattle
The assessor says the property was first developed in 1966 and the QFC portion was built in 1980, so it very well could have been a Lucky supermarket. Lucky came to the Seattle-Tacoma market with the purchase of the Big Bear chain in 1958 and sold the division off to Associated Grocers in 1985. Alon...

Re: Anybody Want to Buy a Slightly Used Kmart? (Bellevue, WA)
Was the addition to the right once a Kmart Foods? Looks like an early seventies store, so would be in the right time frame... From the air, it looks almost identical to the 72nd & Portland store in Tacoma, which was built in 1968 and had a Kmart Foods, visible in this grand opening photo . Acco...

Re: Seattle Area White Front Stores
This page lists the grand opening of the Everett White Front store as May 13, 1971. (It also notes the Everett Sears opened Feb. 12, 1969.) The Tacoma store opened Nov. 2, 1967. Valu-Mart (owned by Weisfield's, better known for their jewelry stores) took over in April 1973 -- I would assume that th...

The Boston Market in Silverdale, WA is an independent "Chung's Teriyaki" Just down the road in Bremerton, the Boston Market became a Washington Federal Savings branch. They even use the drive-through window... of course, it doesn't slide open anymore! I can't remember if it might have clo...

Re: PayLess Drugs (Northwest)
The vast majority of the current Rite Aid (former Payless) stores around here happen to be carryovers from the old Pay 'n Save. The Pay 'n Save brand existed from 1941-1988, and the company also owned a number of other brands including Lamonts, Pay 'n Pak, Ernst Hardware, Malmo Nursery, Sportswest ...
