Athens, Georgia had 2 stores, 1 built in the 60's in a shopping center and 1 downtown which was much older. It had entrances off of 2 parallel streets stretching across the middle of a block. The upper "main" entrance floor had the lunch counter, a big staffed candy case with those giant H...

Since we're counting lumberyards here (apparently we are, since someone mentioned Wickes), .... Actually, Wickes back in its day, also operated full-line home improvement stores as well, much like some of the Lowe's stores built in the late 80's and early 90's. A few were near Wickes Furniture stor...

Re: W. Bell and Co.

Who remembers in the Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Houston; and Chicago areas the Service Merchandise and Best Products similarity chain W. Bell and Co.? The one in Atlanta was just across I-75/I-85 from The Varsity...I near Gordy Tire (Gordy Tire and The Varsity were both in the same family)...near t...

What I found unusual about Orbach's was that although it was a regional chain, it operated in two regions that were far away from each other: New York/New Jersey and Southern California. The only other regional department store I can think of that operated in non-adjacent regions was Gimbels, which...

This is skipping from California to Michigan to Florida. In 1962, TG&Y opened a store at Village Green Shopping Center in Cocoa-Rockledge, FL. This area already had Woolworth's, W. T. Grant, Kresge, W. W. Mac, and Neisner's. There had to have been other TG&Y locations in Florida that time, ...

Re: Gibsons

The El Paso store was probably part of the others in this part of the country.....Gibson Products Company....the headquarters was in Seagoville, TX. Gibsons were all over the northern part of Texas, into Oklahoma and Kansas, and maybe other states too. ... Gibson Products Company operated stores in...

Re: York Steak House

I don't know exactly when the chain finally went away, but I was familiar with locations in the 70's and 80s, and as stated, they were typically in shopping malls. There were a number in Florida and Georgia that I recall seeing. They were generally tray-service steak houses similar to Bonanza and Po...

The stores used the "A&P" banner, sometimes with no additional wording, sometimes with the phrase Food Market added. Oftentimes, the words Food Market were run together (FoodMarket). The above quote sums it up rather well. Many of the former Big Star locations simply saw a replacement...

That Portola store offers a very attractive storefront. I did a Google search a few weeks back and noted several other Red & White store listing in California. Maybe some of them are still open. Also the name still seems to be in use in the Maritime Provinces of Canada as well.

I lived in the area from 1979 until 1991. When I first arrived, I believe Gooding's still had only their flagship store in Maitland. It was rather small, but offered top quality meats, produce, baked goods, and specialty groceries in addition to the more routine items. They began an expansion progra...

David, I think going regional is a good idea because it allows the readers to home in on posts that are of prime interest. If regions ARE designated, it becomes an issue of balancing logical grouping along with the desire to create just the right number of regions, i.e., not too many and not too few...

In the 60's and 70's, Red and White stores were all over Middle and South Georgia and in South Carolina as well at the very least. In the Savannah and Charleston areas, they had quite a number of stores, and over that way were NOT just relegated to small towns. As stated earlier, one did typically f...

As stated earlier, Woolco stores were in many states. Metropolitan Atlanta had several as did Central Florida. One location most memorable to me was below the the southwest quadrant/corner of Semoran Boulevard and Curry Ford Road in Orlando. It was located in a small strip center also containing and...

Bonus Gifts Points

I recall this program from back in the 70's, maybe even back into the late 60's. Basically, it was a system whereby consumers could collect and redeem/convert the points by mail for certificates equivalent to a set value of trading stamp books that would be honored by most of the then-current tradin...

Re: Jordan Marsh CP Orlando restaurant location

IIRC, the dining room was on the third floor. Colonial Plaza had many old but interesting places. In addition to the aforementioned Ronnie's and Jordan Marsh dining room, there were a Harvest House coffee shop in Woolworth's as well as a snack bar opening onto the "mall" walkway. The enti...
