Re: Food Giant/Mayfair connection in Las Vegas?

Mayfair entered Arizona in the late 50s under the El Rancho banner-there was an existing operator using the "Mayfair" name. By the early 70s, there were El Ranchos in Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma, and Flagstaff. During the 70s, Mayfair bought the Food Giant chain in Tucson, the handful of El Ranc...

Re: Plaid Stamps in California

It seems like Blue Chip had a near-monopoly in trading stamps in Cal, only a few chains offered S&H, and Gold Bond and Top Value were non existant there.

Re: Smith's/PriceRite/Food4Less Las Vegas

The Kingman and Havasu stores are still Smith's, everything else in AZ became Fry's (or closed if it was near an existing Fry's that was in better shape than the Smith's)

The original Food City is in the same general area - and still operating. Food City was bought by Bashas' in the 90s and is now the chains ethnic-discount operation.

Aw, that's too bad! The Levitz store in Fresno had a massive neon sign dating from the 60's. Somewhere I have a picture of it lit up at night. Levitz had one of their big rotating neon signs in West Phoenix also - visible from a long distance. The Levitz family is still involved in the furniture bu...

After the Kroger/Fred Meyer merger, Kroger then acquired Baker's in Omaha, NE from Fleming, a deal which included a couple of F4L's in the area. Kroger has since expanded the F4L banner to Chicago, a market which Kroger exited roughly 1971 by selling most locations to Dominick's, which was part of F...

Unfortunately, A&P didn't seem to care in the 60s. They fell behind the competition in terms of pricing, store location, and development of modern stores with the kinds of departments people wanted. they adopted trading stamps just as other chains began dropping them. The long narrative ads wer...

The "SAFEWAY" font on the main street sign in Lander seems to be of recent heritage..maybe the original panel was taken out by Wyoming's weather!

Love those mosaic "circle S"'s...have a 60s coolness to them.

http://www.99w.com/evilsam/gallery/groceteria/20070527dillonswichitaks.jpg Found this one interesting. For those not in the know, Dillons is a Kroger-owned chain and by far the dominant player in the Wichita market. In fact, it's basically about 18 Dillons, a few Wal-Mart Supercenters, some Aldi st...
