Re: Bob's Big Boy former L.A. locations
The Allie's-to-Big Boy conversion plans were announced in 1988. I thought that was when Marriott bought the chain, but I guess I was wrong. This is a brief mention in the LA Times from 3/28/1988: The new name for the Big Boy units being remodeled in San Diego will be "Allie's Family Restaurant,...

Re:
Growing up in Oceanside, CA, we had what was called "Allie's" that later became Coco's. Was Allie's apart of Bob's Big Boy? I remember they had a great buffet for breakfast and lunch. Sure missed it when Coco's tookover. Allie's was a Marriott-owned chain. When Marriott bought Big Boy the...

Re: Garfield Theater-turned shopping center, Alhambra
The Garfield Theater was a Chinese movie house at least in the early 1980's, as were most of the businesses with storefronts in the building. There was all-night pharmacy called Sawabini's (which I guess was Japanese by the name) fronting Garfield. It looks to me based on the satellite views that th...

Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV
According to this post on the Franklin Avenue blog: http://franklinavenue.blogspot.com/2008/12/mad-men-gets-its-la-logos-right.html an episode of Mad Men that takes place in LA has a grocery bag with the old script version of the Ralphs logo. They didn't have a picture but I presume it's the pre-ova...

Highland Park Marina Safeway/Big Lots closing
I saw this over on the Lotta Living board, that the Big Lots, a Marina Safeway, in Highland Park is closing. The original store opened in 1955 but this is likely a replacement store since, as one of the posters points out, the original Marina didn't open until 1959. Safeway was still building pylon ...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
There is also an older store in downtown San Fernando though I've never been in it and it's likely in a similar situation and demographic as the Huntington Park store, the nearest mall stores being in Northridge and Glendale. It still has the pre-stylized logo sign. If these stores weren't profitabl...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
According to SEC filings, the official name of the company is J. C. Penney Company, Inc. Unlike Sears, Roebuck and Company, there's no "and" or ampersand in the name. According to Wikipedia, it took this name (perhaps without the "Inc") in 1912 when James Cash Penney bought The G...

They switched from the "Penneys" logo to the current "JCPenney" logo in 1971, though some stores' signage still used the old logo for a while. I remember the Stonewood store in Downey as having the old logo in the late 70s.

Re: Leonard's Department Store in Southern California
The OSH on South Victory in Burbank was a Leonard's. The Albertsons on the corner of Palms and Sepulveda in West LA is a heavily remodeled Leonard's. It was a Fazio's, then Albertsons, Grocery Warehouse, and Max Foods. (It was never an A&P or Shopping Bag, Fazio's forerunners.) The Lucky across ...

This one is believed to be a Vons but appears to be much older. I have doubts about it being a Vons because of a "Y" logo on the meat dept signs, but who knows? http://digarc.usc.edu/assetserver/controller/view/whit-m1167/DW-2-126-4-ISLA Possibility 1: The bottom of the signs appear to sa...

Re: Sav-On Food/Drug Stores
- During Jewel's ownership (pre-ASC), they combined drug operations with Osco Drug, Clark Drugs, and Rea-Derrick Drugs as well as in-store pharmacies for Jewel and Buttrey, which later became American Drug Stores under ASC. This is a very minor point, but Clark Drugs was acquired by ASC and merged ...

Re: Chino CA chain drugstore update
There would have been a pharmacy inside Gemco, now Superior. I believe it's been posted previously that the Drug Emporium was a former Market Basket but was torn down to build Gigante. The nearest Clark Drugs store to Chino was in Ontario on Grove at the 60. I think there were two versions of the ol...

Re: Buffalo Ranch Restaurant, San Bernardino CA
As I remember it, the RB Furniture was on Inland Center Drive between H and Adell, across from Sears. Back to the original topic... Buffalo Ranch was an upscale format from Sizzler and they started in 1993 with the plan to convert 100 (out of 722) Sizzler stores to the format. The first one opened i...

Re: Shopping Centers in Popular Culture
It's from the early 1980s but the Sherman Oaks Galleria was featured in Valley Girl and Fast Times at Ridgemont Times. The video for Tom Petty's Free Falling was ostensibly at the Galleria but was actually filmed at the Westside Pavilion. From the 1990's, Scenes from a Mall supposedly took place at ...

Re: Strange (very small) Kmart format
This doesn't really count, but the first Kmart was a concept store that was a converted Kresge in San Fernando, CA, at the corner of Rinaldi and Laurel Canyon. It was only 24,000 square feet. It's now a dd's discounts. Some more info at http://pleasantfamilyshopping.blogspot.com/2008/04/ss-kresges-p...
