Re: Fresh & Easy's new Smarter Store
<Design> Beautiful. Cross between a Trader Joes and Whole Foods? <Quality & Freshness> No change. <Prices> Used to be competitive with Vons. Competitive with Whole Foods? My wife says it's too expensive now and won't go there at all. <Checkout> I liked the self checkouts. Cut down to two. Longer...

Re: Mayfair Markets - Geography and History
The last Mayfair in Las Vegas was on Paradise Road. Ed Meyers, President of Mayfair at the time took over this store as part of his severance. He operated it until the airport quite forcibly bought him out. He took that money and bought the old Fox\Markettown\Food Fair\Pantry Pride\Smiths\Pioneer at...

Re: Thrifty/Payless in Las Vegas
Here's another Thrifty ad. I think Maryland and Karen is now OfficeMax. The Habitat building on North Decatur is an original Food Fair and later a Pay N PaK Hardware. The vacant lot of a former Wonderworld and the very first Lucky's in LV. (Originally a Wonder World Discount Foods that Lucky's bough...

Re: Thrifty/Payless in Las Vegas
Here's a Thrifty ad from 1972. The Nellis unit was bulldozed for a Super Walmart. The address for the downtown unit doesn't exist, although it looks like the building survives.

Re: Rainbow/Flamingo, Las Vegas
Compare the former CompUSA at Valley View and West Sahara. That was the same design as the building we are talking about on Rainbow. I wonder if you'll see any similarities. I don't remember Lucky's changing the building exterior to a huge degree. Spring Valley was well developed when Safeway closed...

Re: Big Lots at McLeod and Sahara Former Kmart Foods?
The store next to Kmart on East Sahara was built by Food Fair as a Pantry Pride. Later became a Smith's and then Pic N Sav.

Re: Rainbow/Flamingo, Las Vegas
The store on the Southeast corner of Rainbow was originally built by Safeway. When I moved here in 1985 it was one of a couple closed Safeway stores. A few years later Lucky's reopened and remodeled the store.

Re: West Covina area grocery history
Have you seen anything about Smith's 80's pre Lucky's buyout locations in your research? I remember 3 stores in the general area of West Covina. One which was a Marketbasket that Smith's actually first opened, south of the 10. Another which was a fairly new Marketbasket just north of the other store...

Sorry about the pics, myspace don't do tiffs, so I have to convert. The 50 locations in Nevada are interesting. Maybe some were in rural nevada or Reno? Wondering if some of those locations could have been non grocery business's like cstore's? Would be interesting to investigate further. Plug for th...

Re: Food Giant/Mayfair connection in Las Vegas?
Any thoughts on who owned the Tucson Food Giant chain before Mayfair came along? Chain or local ownership?
There aren't any logos on the Food Giant ad I copied for Las Vegas. Just says Food Giant Supermarkets. The 1000 Tonopah Hwy (Rancho) says formerly Faiman's Market.
Was Food Giant in SoCal in 62?

Re: Smith's/PriceRite/Food4Less Las Vegas
An interesting tidbit to add to the Mayfair story. The President of Mayfair around the time they started closing stores in Arizona was Ralph Ed Myers. The story Ed told me was that he saved the most profitable location for last, the Mayfair on Paradise & Tropicana in Las Vegas. Mayfair gave him ...
