Re: Chatham, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1925-2019

... of local buildings! Here's what I found from a quick browse-through: * A stunning night shot of Food City on 440 St. Clair St., 1971. * Dominion on 351 Richmond St., 1959. The building's a beauty... and it's identical to another Dominion from this period that still stands in London! ...

Re: Stratford, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1925-2019

... the city contained a pair of excellent artifacts. One of them is this provocatively-canted store at 477 Huron St., Stratford, ON, which housed a Dominion from the late 1950s to the mid 1980s (and a Mr. Grocer for a few years after that). It seems awfully big for its age, so I wonder if it was ...

... five other stores in the pre-Kroger era: * 324-328 W North Ave . This was a long and skinny building (resembling an early postwar A&P or Dominion) that was built to face the street, and it essentially survives intact. This was also the longest-lived Krambo-Kroger location in Milwaukee, ...

Re: Chatham, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1925-2019

... there's been a lot of redevelopment in the downtown centre over the last 94 years. The right half of this building is the location where one of Dominion's very first stores operated... if this is the same building that stood on this site in 1925. I'm not convinced; it looks more modern than ...

Chatham, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1925-2019

... Chatham's supermarket history? Unsurprisingly, it parallels Sarnia , London , and other southwestern Ontario cities to a large degree. As usual, Dominion entered by 1925 with four neighbourhood stores...and as usual, A&P and Loblaws opened up shop by 1930 with a single store apiece. A small ...

Re: Mystery store: 225 King St. E., Bowmanville, ON

Dominion or A&P come to mind for me as well, but either would just be a guess. The black stone(?) below the windows looks very Loblaw-ish but nothing else does.

Mystery store: 225 King St. E., Bowmanville, ON

... to a Foodland franchise at this address...but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been built as something else before that. I want to say Dominion, but that may just be wishful thinking on my part.

... Knechtel, and Foodland names, and all of these were Oshawa banners as well. But there's still a possibility that it could have been built as a Dominion or A&P.

There is a Dollar Tree store at the opposite end of the same shopping centre. Maybe this was the original Dominion? Your guess is as good as mine.

Well, this is a nice surprise! Not half-bad for artifacts, either. One '50s Dominion still peddling groceries as Food Basics. The old Loblaws at 811 Princess St still has (brick-ups over) side windows visible. The Metro at 310 Barrie St. reuses the A&P off-centre ...
