Re: NEW: Vancouver and Victoria BC
There actually were a couple of Dominion stores in Vancouver on the sheet. Three, to be specific. one of which seems still to be standing at 1332 Kingsway . Vancouver was, I think, Safeway's point of entry into Canada. I'm not sure if they ...

Re: NEW: Vancouver and Victoria BC
Great stuff, as usual. I hoped that this data would shed some light on the question of whether Dominion ever operated in BC (giving it true coast-to-coast status), but it did not. But it did shed light on the early Canadian history and coexistence of Safeway and Piggly ...

Re: Stores in London, Ontario
... found (along with a few present-day stores I had previously overlooked): London, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1925-2018. Some findings: * Dominion was the first chain to become well-established in London, with 8 stores by 1925. Loblaws entered London by 1930, and A&P entered by 1935. ...

Re: Sarnia, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1924-2018
Dominion's bygone stores in Sarnia was located at 260 Indian Road, and it operated from the 1960s until the 1985 A&P sale. The building still stands; unfortunately, Shoppers Drug Mart has slathered over it with one of their generic facades.

Re: Sarnia, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1924-2018
metro2.jpg Here is 560 Exmouth Street, which is another Metro store with a long history. A Dominion opened on this site in the mid-1950s, later operating under the A&P, A&P Super Fresh, and Metro names. The aerial image suggests the store has been expanded to ...

Re: Sarnia, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1924-2018
Excellent. I was thinking of circling through Sarnia on my fall road trip. If it’s worth seeing, I may. Looking forward to the list. Dominion seems to have made strange withdrawals (with subsequent returns) from several cities in the 1940s and 1950s. I think there must’ve been some sort ...

Sarnia, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1924-2018
... classified listings for which Vernon's Ontario directories are known. Its grocery history is also on the interesting side. Unsurprisingly, Dominion was the first chain to enter Sarnia, doing so in the first half of the 1920s. Loblaws and A&P emerged in the following decade. Unlike in ...

... stores started off as Loblaws...but a 1995 directory lists this address as a Mr. Grocer store, which suggests that this started out as yet another Dominion and was divested during the 1985 A&P sale. midblock.jpg If I'm not mistaken, this is 57 Kent St, home to Lindsay's original 1920s-era Loblaws ...

Re: NEW: Saint John NB, 1930-2000
Dominion had a very strong presence here. Were they national prior to their 1985 sale/dismantling? They operated at least as far west as Alberta. I’m not sure if they had locations in BC or not. I think Safeway ended up with ...

Re: Stores in London, Ontario
... 1961, so I'm piecing together a location spreadsheet. So far it's been an illuminating experience. London had four major players in 1961 (A&P, Dominion, Loblaw's, and Steinberg's), plus a large smattering of independents. Steinberg abruptly exited in the early '70s after their store base shrunk ...
