Re: When did these A&Ps close? Were any of them replaced?

Correct on the 1974 date. A wave of A&P closings in all divisions took place during the 1970-1975 period. Some stores were replaced with newer ones, some newer ones were closed leaving older ones, and some markets were demoted from several stores to one. This was the aftermath of price competit...

Re: Penn Fruit outside Pennsylvania

But did any of those stores have their trademark roof? There was, however, a Food Fair in Stratford, NJ with a very similar design to Penn Fruit. I mistook it for a Penn Fruit at first. Later it was a Phar-Mor, and is now a Goodwill store. Lawrenceville and Bergen had the famous roof. Cherry Hill h...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Eckerd or Bradlees (or Yankees as I call it)! Just because of personal preferences, for old times sake. I still have a hard time accepting both of them as out of business. If you want to bring Bradlees Back There's a Gem Mint condition vacant store in Bordentown NJ you can set up shop in, Seriously...

Re: Penn Fruit outside Pennsylvania

I know, I am in a "posting mood" today! Is it true that Penn Fruit only had one store each in NJ and DE? The only one in NJ I know of was in Audubon. It had a slight "quonset hut" design. This store was one of two "flagship" Penn Fruits built in 1955. The other was in ...

Hi,I remember the original Acme in the King of Prussia Mall it was tor down andis now part of a department store. The new store is up a bit on route 202 and interestingly enough has been built on the site of what was A&P !s headquarter store in the Philadelphia Division the was located across th...

Re: "Northeastern Chains" in Florida?

I have never really lived near a Grand Union. But that seemed like a strange chain in that it was kind of "scattered". It was mainly a Northeastern chain, but avoided Philadelphia. Their other operations were in Virginia, Georgia (Big Star; stores sold to A&P, then Kroger), and Weinga...

Re: Nichols Discount City

I do. They were a strange one. Nothing really set them apart from Kmart, or Woolco, or Grant City. They could be found in Ephrata and Chambersburg in PA and Maple Shade, NJ. The Maple Shade one briefly was next to a Centennial A&P. Later that was a "Cloth World" store. And the Ephrata...

Re: Two different "Sav-on" chains?

The Kroger Sav-on Chain was based in New Jersey and it was owned by James Herring, who was instrumental in the modernization of Kroger in the late 60s and 70s as the CEO with the introduction of the Superstores. the SuperX drugstores were spawned from this chain

Re: Dominion Square - Culpeper, VA

I concure with the rest of the posters that it was 100% Indeed an late 80s-original Superfresh as this was the exact building style that A&P used for just about every new store during that prosperous period for the company. examples can be also seen in Bristol PA, A Baptist Church in North Phila...

Nichols Discount City

Anyone remember Nichols Discount City? They were the Predecessor of the Pharmhouse Superdrugstores and operated about 40 units in the Mid Atlantic region

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

yeah........weremember........you get my vote :-) For me, of course, it would be the "Fabulous Food Fair" days before Friedland's sons took over. This was a time when the company was unstoppable with innovation. A time when their growth was unprecedented for such a relatively new company....

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Just a little late-night musing... Alternate history: In 1986, Lucky Stores spun off it's GEMCO division. As a new company, GEMCO struggled to find its place in the late 80's discount arena. After closing all but their California stores in 1989, GEMCO went on a massive rebranding campaign, focusing...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

To me, being from the East Coast I'd bring back Food Fair/Pantry Pride, Penn Fruit and Grand Union (the latter in its full Glory, red dots and all , not the C&S version of today) Penn Fruit I'd envision as I said in an earlier to be like a larger Upscale store like Wegman's or Whole Foods, empha...

Mervyn's Their private label brand was always well-made. I still have a number of fleece shorts that I wear in the yard and to workout. The floor mats in the house have held on for YEARS. I STILL have from my college dorm room...plastic drawers that I still use. Yup...Mervyn's Well, Dean I wasn't e...

Pantry Pride/Rawson-Jacksonville: Missing Link Solved

This may be of interest to our Food Fair "historian" Steve Landry, regarding the renmants of Pantry Pride. I personally wanted to know what happened with the old Jacksonville Division while Googling tonight I happened upon this article http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=wkcuAAAAIBAJ&...
