Re: Gene Crane

What was the ad you speak of about? I only saw that brilliant cartoon on JSF's page. Actually I must correct myself JSF has an Acme radio aircheck from WFIL radio ( on his flickr) http://www.flickr.com/photos/42444189@N04/4750077326/in/set-72157622611074182/ but the ad with Gene Crane's voice is on...

Re: A&P to close 25 stores.

Hi. A&P plus stores qas that companies foray into Box Stores, that were the rage during the last great recession. Sav A Lot. Mad Grocers and many more were all over the place. I remember one in Norristown on the Germantown Pike across the street from Shop Rite and Bradleys. Others that I remene...

Re: A&P to close 25 stores.

My question is, how does A&P survive at all anymore? I will have to infer that the unions keep them afloat, such as the deal that created the Super Fresh division. Here is a list of notable A&P store closings/name changes/sell-offs: 1. 1969: A&P abandons the West market after only 10 ye...

Re: Gene Crane

Gerry and Ephrata1966: Gene was MUCH MORE than simply a spokesperson for Acme. that was a side job. He was a longtime fixture on Philadelphia Television he was at WCAU (originally CBS now NBC) for 57 years in numerous capacities, as a man on the street interviewer, the host of numerous childrens sho...

Re: Great Scot Supermarkets/Perloff Brothers-PA/NJ

Hi,I vaugely remember when i first came to this market with Quaker Oats , old timers mention Perloff Brothers and Great Scot Stores.I believe they had gotten out of the retail supermarket supply business around 1980. They stayed around for a few years as Tartan Foods a food service provider with a ...

Re: Recurring "new" uses for obsolete grocery stores, Phila.

There are several national retailers that seem to love older grocery stores. Again, this trend seems mostly Philadelphia-centric, but not that different from Houston. These companies have all taken over at least a few older Acme/A&P/Food Fair/Penn Fruit stores. Joshaustin610/Josh has photo evid...

Re: Did Cheltenham Square ever have an A&P, Acme, Food Fair?

There was no Food Fair. They had a Pantry Pride nearby at the Cedarbrook Mall. At one time it was the busiest store in the company's Philadelphia region. It was originally an E J Korvette supermarket. They had a store at 19th and Cheltenham Avenue that was a FF later converted to PP and a Best Mark...

Re: Did Cheltenham Square ever have an A&P, Acme, Food Fair?

According to an archive dated sepember 6 1985 in the Montgomery County Record/Daily Intelligencer (presumably related to the Doylestown Intelligencer newspaper) A pitched roof Acme operated at the mall presumably as an outparcel from 1963-1984 then closed when Acme said that the lease was too costly...

Re: Bob Saget Acme connections?

According to Wikipedia, Bob Saget's dad was a Philadelphia supermarket executive. I wonder what chain! (Bob Saget from 80's show Full House) Actually some sources including Wikipedia said that Bob Saget worked at a Pantry Pride during his youth so Bob's pop may have had Food Fair ties, of course th...

Re: Penn Fruit outside Pennsylvania

Kind of odd the Fairless Hills one was replaced by BOTH Giant and Wal-Mart. Most Bradlees became Wal-Mart. Only mine (Broomall) became Giant. I thought that had to do with Stop & Shop's owning Bradlees until 1992, and keeping the real estate. But apparently this property, including the former A...

Re: Penn Fruit outside Pennsylvania

Hi, The former Glass Brothers Shop Rite outside of the Bergen Mall in Paramus New Jersey I believe has been demolished or is about to be. The store in River Edge is no longer a Shop Rite and has been converted to other uses. It never had the barrel roof that Penn Fruit was famous for. The Penn Frui...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Whoops, I didn't realize this had to be a supermarket. I know many ex-Eckerds have not been remodeled much at all. But their decor has changed. And both CVS and Rite Aid have closed plenty of the Eckerds they bought, even after converting them. This is not to mention the countless stores they close...

Re: Centennial A&Ps "reconstituted" as Super Fresh

From "Family Pride", a history book on the Genuardi family, I found out they wanted what is now the Bed Bath & Beyond building. Not sure what it used to be, but it was one of Bed Bath & Beyond's first modern stores. It was recently closed for a few months for interior remodeling. ...

Re: Penn Fruit outside Pennsylvania

That makes sense, but do you remember where you heard it was an Acme? Could it possibly have been a Thriftway? And are you sure Phar-Mor was not here until when you say? It's just an assumption, as I am not from the area but a couple of posters on the Flickr website mentioned that other food stores...
