Re: Food Fait/Pantry Pride locations in Downtown Philadelphia?

CORRRECTION: Neil was correct I re-researched on Google news archives and it was 1958 when Best was aquired by FF. How soon do you mean by "soon"? I thought Food Fair bought a small chain that called its products Pantry Pride in 1967, but the store conversions never began until at least 19...

Re: Was the Sharon Hill, PA Acme slated to close years ago?

I think by 1970 all of the stores in the Philadelphia region were converted to Pantry Pride. The ones that they did not convert were the older stores that had no future and were closed when the leases expired. Some of those I remember were Adams and the Roosevelt Blvd., Tulip and Allegheny and I be...

Re: Food Fait/Pantry Pride locations in Downtown Philadelphia?

At 23rd and South Streets there was a Best Market. Food Fair acquired the chain in 1957 or 58. It was one of the stores they changed over to Food Fair and later to Pantry Pride. The last I heard it was still a supermarket. Ah Yes! Youre probably referring to the South Square (Thriftway) Market. Thi...

Food Fait/Pantry Pride locations in Downtown Philadelphia?

Just wondering. I go to Downtown Philadelphia from time to time and if I needed to pick up something grocery-wise on the way home I usually go to the Superfreshes on Pine street and South Street or the Wholefoods on South street and I was just wondering , but what I want to speak about is Historical...

Finast/ First National (the Pick N Pay, Pre-Ahold years)

I hope someone can help me on this, because is something I had been wanting to know for many years now. I remember reading Supermarket News in the mid late 90s about the two different Finast chains after Pick N Pay owner Julius Kravitz bought the chain in 1978. Though I know that PNP was a Ohio (Mid...

Re: Possible former Centennial A&P

Merry Christmas! Smyrna is in central/southern Delaware, a little north of Dover and not far east of Chestertown, Maryland (home of a restored Acme A Frame). The Chestertown Super Fresh may have replaced the small Centennial A&P downtown which is today a Dollar General. I believe Zayre may have...

Re: Genuardi's in Philadelphia County and NJ/DE/MD

Hi, Safeway had stores in Delaware for twenty years untill yje 80!s when they pulled out of the state. They were not sucessful then and they are trying to get out of Delaware now. Sometimes a chain just dosen!t make it certain areas no matter how good an opperator they are, As for Acme having only ...

Re: Genuardi's in Philadelphia County and NJ/DE/MD

From what I've gathered the belief was always that within the Philly city limits people were more pro-union, and as such both Clemens and Genuardi's unofficially would never go into the city. The fear would be that if they opened a store in the city, the employees would be more likely to unionize; ...

Re: A&P in South Philadelphia

Oh yes, the Kmart closing has been in our papers for a couple weeks now! Perhaps the Pathmark will follow? I seriously wonder how long Sears Holdings, A&P, Safeway, and Rite Aid can all hold on. The Wine & Spirits store in South Philly sounds extremely profitable. This was briefly a PLCB &q...

Re: A&P in South Philadelphia

I still wonder where the A&P was in this part of the city. There had to be one somewhere. We know there was Acme (now Oregon Chinese Market), Food Fair (later Channel, now ALDI), Penn Fruit (later Thriftway, now CVS), and Penn Fruit (later Acme, now Ross). The Acme on Oregon Ave is actually a V...

Re: A&P to close 25 stores.

I remember a classic Centennial A&P that became a Plus, it closed and was vacant for a number of years untiil a deli and catering place and a Thrift Drug Moved in. then in the 90s the deli closed and Giant (PA) took over the property bulldozed the old building and built a new store there. Do yo...
