Re: Matawan-style Texacos, and their rarity
There was a Matawan Texaco in Ocean City, NJ that became a Shell in the 2000s, but I'm not sure if it's still a Shell today. I don't know the address but it's behind the Acme which until recently was a Super Fresh (owned by A&P). There also was a Texaco (not a Matawan building) in nearby Somers ...

Re: Bucks Crossing/Bucks County Mall
The former Centennial A&P/Super Fresh at Gateway Shopping Center in Devon-Berwyn also is home to a TJ Maxx. Sadly, the whole center was remodeled last year, and the TJ Maxx was remodeled to hide its Centennial A&P features. That might actually be the only example I know of where a Centennial...

Re: Late 70s A&P store video
I really wish I knew where this A&P/Venture was. A lot of empty Venture stores were replaced by Kmart. If this one was, I am really curious as to how much remodeling Kmart would have done. Kmart moved into newer former Venture stores such as the ones in Houston without changing much at all, but ...

Re: Was the A&P capsule logo really used before 1976?
I'm pretty sure the A&P in Lindenwold, NJ opened in 1975 with the capsule logo. This A&P had a bakery and deli which were both remarkable at the time. It's a shame A&P didn't build more stores in Greater Philadelphia with this prototype. There were dozens of beautiful Centennial A&Ps...

Re: Great former Safeway in Dallas
This store was replaced sometime in the 70's (or possibly late 60's?) by a larger Safeway a few blocks south. In Bing Maps aerial view, zoom out from the earlier Safeway building and you can see the later Safeway building. I'm assuming the later Safeway closed in 1987 with the Dallas division but I ...

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s
There was a Centennial A&P (not sure if it was originally a Centennial) in Irving at one time. It at one point was a Dollar General but I'm not sure if it still is or not. And I'm assuming it must have been something in between when A&P closed and Dollar General opened but I'm not sure what....

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s
The Houston market I believe lost A&P in the early to mid 1970s. I don't think they became any grocery stores afterward (maybe Minimax), but I don't believe any exist today. A&P closed their Houston stores way back in 1966. Yep, just short of 50 years before the A&P chain totally came t...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
This might not really count as "supermarkets" but it's pretty remarkable: Newtown Square Shopping Center in Newtown Square, PA has not one but two Wine & Spirits stores (popularly known as state stores) in it today. One is inside the Acme in the center but the other is behind the Hallm...

Re: Possible ex-Kroger
The location is wrong as the small Greenhouse is not in Katy, it is on 1960 and Jones Road. But the replacement time frame would be right, about 1985 for the new store on North Jones Road, which has also since been replaced. No, I wasn't saying any of the stores on Jones and 1960 were in Katy. But ...

Re: Possible ex-Kroger
According to a government website, Jones Square (the small greenhouse center) was built in 1977, and I know I read somewhere that the later Kroger greenhouse in Katy (which also replaced a small greenhouse now a Goodwill) was built in 1985, so I would guess the store now a Big Lots was open from 197...

Re: Possible ex-Kroger
That was a Kroger store. Probably what was called a Super Store II, which were smaller sized stores, around 30K square foot rather than the 45K size store. One thing that gives it way in the aerial shot is the covered up air intakes and fan exhaust for the engine room in the corner of the store. Th...

Could this be a former Acme or A&P?
The Wine & Spirits Superstore (owned by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) in Bala Cynwyd, PA, as seen in this photo: http://s.lnimg.com/photo/full/8b92683f78ce4cf48cd60429fe62127a.jpg It reminds me a little bit of the former Acme in this photo: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FgFRgV0BLVQ/Uq-6aDhm...
