Re: Safeway in Shreveport

Here's a Safeway commercial from the early-mid 80's that I'm assuming was aired nationally (but perhaps not in Hawaii, for obvious reasons) but was uploaded to YouTube after being recorded onto a home VHS tape from a TV channel in Shreveport: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P6EVq6wdIbU I doubt it was...

Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar

What kind of local stuff is this you speak of? I didn't realize their prices were high but that explains a lot. But unless Albertsons having high prices is really the only reason, I don't get why A&P was accepted by New Orleanians (A&P operated in the area for at least 75 years, and I'm ass...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

What do you mean by "original" here? Also do you know what the criteria was that was used to decide which TG&Y stores were closed in 1986 and which ones were spared? Original, as in pre-1986, before McCrory truly assimilated the chain. Some TG&Y stores were open until McCrory fold...

Re: A&P "Centennial" Stores Still Housing Supermar

I don't believe there were any in New Orleans proper, but there were centennials in Lafayette, Morgan City and New Iberia for sure, and the New Iberia store still houses a supermarket. Albertsons didn't work in New Orleans because they couldn't customize enough to satisfy the locals. Plain and simpl...

Re: Big Chain, Shreveport LA

I'm just having a really good time with this stuff. Now I've dredged a story about the rise and fall of Big Chain.

Safeway in Shreveport

In my research, I've found that though Safeway had a long, storied history in Louisiana (from Minden east), they did not enter Shreveport until 1972. Even better, the first store didn't spend much time as a Safeway. That first store, at Jewella and Greenwood Road, was in a perfect site, with Weingar...

Re: W T Grant

I know this is an older thread, but here's the Shreveport store I mentioned waaaaaaay back on this one:. sportgrant.jpg This store opened on April 13, 1972. It was eventually renamed Grant City, and the center also featured Eckerd Drugs (which stayed the longest) and one of Shreveport's first Safewa...

Re: Globe Shopping City

In some of the recent digging I've been doing in Newspapers.com, I found that Globe had two stores in Shreveport, LA; one at 505 W. 70th St. This store was repurposed as a furniture store in the 80's, and is currently a warehouse for the regional Ivan Smith Furniture. The second, smaller store was a...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

A few updates.... I had always wondered about a former Greenhouse Kroger in Opelousas, LA. I took out a temporary subscription to Newspapers.com, which has most of the older Opelousas papers prior to the Gannett buyout there. Anyways, what I didn't know was that Kroger had actually 2 stints in Opelo...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

No. 2, 3101 S. Glenstone I was surprised to find it became a Kmart (recently closed). Was Smitty's-MO that big enough to have one of its stores become a Kmart? After all, the Kmart looked a bit strange to be built by their own hand. Sadly, no. It turns out that it was a Venture and Smitty's operate...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Question for wnetmacman: are you sure the former Kroger in Spring would have been expanded at some point? Looking in Bing Maps, the store doesn't look bigger than a normal Kroger superstore. And would it make sense to you if the Burke's Outlet would have been a TG&Y? I find it a bit odd that th...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Hey... it just occurred to me that both Kroger and TG&Y experimented with stores called "family center" during the same period and in the same regions. Which chain did it first? I'm surprised the two companies didn't fight with one another over exclusive rights to this phrase. Well, y...

Re: The turning point (or something)

Sounds like a great idea. You have always done a good job with the histories, but you can only do so much. Honestly, I'd take whatever I can get at this point. And I've been around here for a looooooong time. This really sounds neat. I'm hoping that soon I can take some pictures of some locations he...

Re: domed/arched roofs non-aesthetic purpose?

I believe it was more from a structural standpoint. In that day and age, flat roofs weren't being built yet because they didn't hold up as well due to design restrictions and flaws of the time. The alternative was this barrel-roof design. Builders could have full trusses holding up the roof in a mor...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

I collected these from an 1983 ad. It's possible one more was built before pull-out in I believe 1985 but it's unlikely. http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?p=20628#p20628 I believe, as we've discussed here before, that they were pretty much done after this list. I'm pretty sure the Lafay...
