I noticed this particular Safeway had an unusual "TV Tube S" signpost (I cannot help but wonder if that originally was the Circle S there, for that was what the original logo was when this store was new) minus the usual SAFEWAY rectangular footer.

Hi, Does anyone here have any vintage Fred Meyer pictures, preferably those taken in the 1970s and '80s, to share on this site??? I would appreciate it if you have pix of the following FM locations: 5253 SE 82nd Ave, Portland, OR 97266 (1979 view) 14700 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Milwaukie, OR 97267 (1985 ...

Cheyenne area Safeway: 469 Cole Ctr.

The Safeway at 469 Cole Center in Cheyenne, WY appears to have been rebuilt sometime between the mid 1970s to 1981 - on the site of an older location - due to the Parking signpost being older than the store itself. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa113/StoreWest/Safeway/swy2cheyalt.jpg http://i19...

Judging by the lettering on the Fred Meyer logo on the second sign and the "Top Gun" design of the neon signs in the electronics department, I'd say it was mid- to late-'80s. That splash of blue neon on Fred Meyer's head and the cut of beef is just damn weird, though! That appears to be f...

Other commercials I'd like to see:

Thriftway (NW/Rockies): "You save more shopping at your Thriftway store" (1979-88)
Any Fred Meyer ad dating from the 1950s to 1987 (before the "You'll Find It At Freddy's" period) (1957-87)

The 16th picture in Jim's collection reminds me of the recently overhauled Safeway in Hillcrest Heights, MD in 1999. That one had originally been rebuilt - on the same site - during the summer of 1979.

Safeway Stores That Lost Their Original Road Signs

Hi, I do not know if this part of the board is appropriate for this post, but I would like to ask you all this question: Why did some old Safeway stores (those built before the 1980's) lose their original road signs? One cause is wind damage, and the other could be road sign ordinances, which can af...

I would like to contribute to this post: All vintage Safeway ads of the 1960s to the 1980s; in particular, those that used the "Since We're Neighbors, Let's Be Friends," "Everything You Want from a Store... and a Little Bit More," "America's Favorite Food Store" and &qu...

Re: Safeway in SE Portland - one to watch

formergrocerygal wrote:Keep an eye on the Safeway on the SW corner of SE 82nd Avenue and Burnside. This store is slated for a big remodel - a much needed one. As far as I know this store has been here for a long time, at least the late 50's. Homes were bulldozed for this beauty.
That store opened on October 27, 1967.

Yeah... I understood that. But for the last couple of years it had been opened (1999-2003), it was designated as a Marketplace.

In the Portland area, there are a few FM Marketplaces that began life as conventional Freddy's:

Glisan
Corvallis
Rockwood
Raleigh Hills
Burlingame

Which Safeways Kept Their Bakeries/Snack Shops 'til the End?

This reminds me... which Safeways in all Oregon (and in Vancouver, WA) had kept their bakeries and snack shops 'til the end of their time?
