Re: Northwest Safeways

Ben, you're close. Safeway built a new store to replace that little store in Astoria, but it was in the early 2000s. I shopped at the gable store while visiting some cousins, probably in 2003 but possibly 2002. I think the new store was already under construction at that point. Is that replacement ...

Re: Northwest Safeways

Regarding that gable-roofed Safeway in Astoria, I believe that is the Duane Street location and I believe Safeway closed that down sometime in the 1990s, as I have noticed the 1980s Safeway logo adorned above the doorway. This location appears to date from the 1950s because of this doorway style. ~Ben

Camas, WA Safeway Question

Is it true that the Safeway in Camas, WA located at 800 N.E. 3rd Ave. is the exact same location as the prior Safeway at 702 N.E. 3rd Ave., considering the two addresses are only one block away? This theory is true when I wrote Safeway back in 2007 about the grand opening of their Lincoln City, OR s...

Re: Northwest Safeways

Does anyone have a picture of the street sign corresponding to the Reedsport, OR Safeway? That location has a gable roof and still has its original 1960s S-A-F-E-W-A-Y letters. I know the street sign had been modified last in the late 1980s-early 1990s.

Re: Safeway marina variants

Were there any Safeways throughout Portland, OR and suburbs that had Marina variations as rare as those you've discovered? I know the Milwaukie location (10554 SE Main St., which closed in 1997), when it re-opened in the spring of 1967 (it was previously a pylon store when it first opened in May 195...

Re: Ellensburg WA Safeway 1965 Open

Just looking through the headline database of the East Side Journal (Kirkland's former newspaper,) it seemed that every 7-10 years Safeway was moving to a new location there. Eventually they settled down into their current mid-Nineties freestanding location and have stayed there since then. Somethi...

Vintage Fred Meyer Pictures Wanted

Hi, If anyone here has any vintage pictures of any given Fred Meyer store past and present, I would appreciate them. My preferred list of vintage FM photographs (photos before 1985 preferred): 1. Oak Grove - 14700 SE McLoughlin Blvd., Milwaukie, OR 97267 (1960, 1969 and c. 1985 views) 2. Clackamas -...

Re: Ellensburg WA Safeway 1965 Open

I'd like to know why they replace a store that was only six years old (!).

Did this ever happen in Portland, OR and its neighboring suburban cities?

McDonald's - 15114 SE McLoughlin Blvd.

Hi, Does anyone know anything about the history of the McDonald's in the Oak Grove area of Milwaukie, OR, located at 15114 SE McLoughlin Blvd.? This was the original McD's in the Oak Grove area (it is presently located at 15870 SE McLoughlin Blvd). When it was new, it probably had no drive-through a...

Question About Mall Tenants in Portland, OR in 1985

Hi, I have a question: what were all the tenants and restaurants in 1985 at all these Portland, OR-area malls? I never explored the inside of the Jantzen Beach Supercenter, so I won't bring that up. Mall hot sheet (all details judged by the best of my own memory): *Lloyd Center (anchors in 1985: J. ...

Re: Question About J. C. Penneys in Portland, OR

I can't comment on the other two spots, but I remember my first visit to Lloyd Center in mid-88, which was before the mall was enclosed. At that point the current JCPenney logo was in use. This space is now Sears. On a related note, Meier & Frank, while updating most of their signage, retained ...

Question About J. C. Penneys in Portland, OR

Hi, I have a question as to three J. C. Penney stores in the Portland, OR area. These three are located at Eastport Plaza, Lloyd Center and at Oregon City Shopping Center, which opened in 1960 (the first two) and 1962 (Oregon City) respectively. These three areas had housed the only JCPs in the city...

Corporate Logos - When We Were Young

Hi, Does anyone remember seeing any corporate logos on all our local stores and restaurants, but (in regards to quite a few) were not then in current use (in printed material) when we were but young schoolboys? My hot sheet in 1986 (aged 5): Sears - Roman Serif font - 1963-1984 (an all-caps variatio...

Safeway Super Stores - When Was the Format Abandoned?

Hi, I have a question as to Safeway's "Super Store" format: This was the big prize during the '60s-'80s: besides selling just food products; that is, Safeway Super Stores had also carried other stuff ranging from outdoor power equipment to home electronics. My question now is: When in the ...

Re: Classic Malls in Portland, OR

Mall 205, which opened in 1970, had a Montgomery Ward (what were M205's other anchors?). It then added a Pay Less Drug Store (the chain known now as Rite-Aid) several years later. Mall 205 opened with a White Front in addition to Montgomery Ward. 205 also had a Troutman's Emporium (now Home Depot)....
