Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
When did Giant start moving into suburban Philadelphia? The earliest I ever remember even hearing about them was in the early 2000's. Also I'm curious as to why there is not much history available about Giant on the Internet. When did they start to become the somewhat dominant player they are today...

Re: Delaware County history resource
Excellent find! Also looks as though there were a few more Pathmark stores in Delaware (the state) that no longer exist (one in Dover, another in the middle of Wilmington somewhere). Also has one in Ogletown but not sure if that's the one in Newark or not.

Re: A&P/Super Fresh/Pathmark closing established PA/NJ stores
Just how far did Pathmark span way back when they were still growing? I know there were some in Connecticut but were there any other states that they've long since bailed out of?

Re: Central PA questions
I think I was the one who posted about the former Ames (Zayre) in Cleona. Found that snippet on Pennlive: Giant to build supermarket Date: May 4, 1994 Page: B5 Giant Food Stores Inc. plans to build a 40,000-square-foot supermarket in Cleona on the site of the former Ames department store in the Cleo...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
Came across some interesting photos on ebay awhile back. A pair of NCR 250's someone was selling along with a pair of early Pathmark checkout scanner photos. http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8415/36610a.jpg http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/4527/36610b.jpg http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1552/...

Re: Possible Original 1962 Kmart
And did Kmart (not Kresge) have any stores remotely close to Delaware in 1962? The now-existing Kmarts in northern Delaware (save for the Claymont store) are from the past 20 years. The stores in Newark and northern Wilmington were former Bradlees, Claymont was a former Grant City, and I think the ...

Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants
Anyone know if Kmart has phased out all Kmart Cafes yet? Another in my area (Panama City Beach, FL) has closed. They have been going one by one, but some I have visited in the last year seem quite viable. This one was replaced with the usual schlocky display of seasonal stuff. It was virtually inta...

Wasn't that the store (Broomall) that was flooded a few years back and rebuilt?JoshAustin610 wrote:Also the Broomall, PA Pathmark; the one article said three in the Philly area, but I only count two so far (Bristol and Broomall).

More central PA Acme stores?
Doing some mindless searches through Google's news archives last night I found that they archived quite a few newspaper supermarket advertisements Anyway, I came across a 1978 ad for Acme which noted a bunch of central PA locations (( http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=l5QzAAAAIBAJ&sjid=HOkFAA...

Lots of out-of-the-way supermarket branded stuff also shows up at the local grocery outlet stores.Ephrata1966 wrote:I saw Pathmark merchandise at a Big Lots in Texas, and Albertsons merchandise at Amelia's.Toby Radloff wrote:I have seen Safeway-branded merchandise at Big Lots once in a while.

That would be the one on Centerville Road in Wilmington. Was formerly a Caldor, now it's a Walmart.Ephrata1966 wrote:
I recall hearing something about a newer Kmart around here somewhere that didn't last either.

Re: That used to be a department store?!
I don't think I can come up with anything more exotic around here than the conversion of a former Caldor (nee Hills, previously Gold Circle IIRC) into office space. I would imagine that's relatively common. There was one in Delaware...New Castle Mall I think...just a small enclosed strip center thi...

Found a few more--Garden City Park, NY...now Pathmark, was Hills originally; and there was another one in Glen Cove (to my recollection, became Foodtown, closed, reopened as Foodtown a 2nd time, then switched to Edwards, not sure what it is now)

Re: That used to be a department store?!
Any idea what else was inside the mall? It looks like it was entirely empty in 1999 save for Service Merch. There was also a B. Dalton in the parking lot; was it built as one? They were almost all boutique clothing stores inside (been 14+ years since I moved off LI so I have to go by memory). There...

Re: Woolco
Been doing some research through the Nassau County (NY) tax records and found out some things, notably (for this thread) that the Jericho store was also a Grant's at some point. I'm assuming it was before Great Eastern. Still no luck finding any more Woolco stores aside from what I already know of t...
