Re: McDonald's Express

The Farmer Jack at 8000 W. Outer Dr. in Detroit opened in 1995 with a McDonald's Express in it. Anyone know if any other Farmer Jacks did this?

Re: The Very First Texaco "System 2000" Stations (1981-1983)

Shell's been doing fast food combos up here since the early 1990s. One company (Forward Corporation) owns nearly all the Shells around here, and most originally had a diner called Forward's, while a couple around Bay City had a local chain called Dawn Donuts. In the early 1990s, the diners were ripp...

Re: Tastee-Freez

We actually got a few newly opened ones in Michigan in the 1990s and 2000s, all in weird locations: * A BP station in Hillman. The station opened with just Subway, but they tacked on A&W and Tastee Freez behind it. Neither lasted long, and I think there's a deli taking up that area. * A combinat...

Mystery store in Dothan, AL

http://www.rickeystokesnews.com/images/articles/Sure2_small.jpg Any idea what this is? It's in Porter Square Mall in Dothan, AL. It looks like Shur Valu and the Dollar General next door share a former grocery space, which is verified by a 1970s article saying there would be a grocery store at the ma...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at

Here in Michigan, we had a chain called Carter's that took a lot of Kroger and IGA locations. Ours in Oscoda was an A&P, and I also shopped at the Tawas City one which used to be a Kroger. I think I also went into Flint's Hamady chain at least once. Two near my aunt's house became A&P for ab...

Re: Early Walgreens stores in Michigan

The Dort and Eastland stores were big enough to have pharmacies. I know Dort did because it closed in the mid-90s as Perry. When it became Perry, the former Walgreens lunch counter was split off into its own storefront, which is still a coney island restaurant. The rest of the store is still vacant ...

Re: Older KFC/A&W combos

I was surprised to find a few A&W/Long John Silvers combos that started out as just LJS. A lot of KFC/Taco Bell 2-in-1s used to be just KFCs (including ours here in Oscoda, since rebuilt), but it seems most all the other 2-in-1s in Michigan were purpose-built. In fact, both Flint and Saginaw had...

Re: Former Boston Market locations in your area

The Boston Market on Washtenaw Avenue In Ann Arbor MI just closed and is being converted over to a McDonalds. Something to do with the divestment of Boston Market by McDonalds last year. This location dates from the late 80's or early 90's. This one has a long history. It opened as "Mister S&q...

Re: Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips

The locations in Detroit and Ann Arbor were spun off by the franchise owner into a new chain called Seafood Bay. That went out of business in 1996 and interestingly, AT bought a couple of them back. Ones in Livonia and Madison Heights became a "Seafood Grille" for about a year, but went in...

Re: Bookstores

I recall a store in one of the malls in Pa. when we lived there by the name of Paperback Booksimth. I think it was a chain but I'm not really sure. Sure had that chain store "feel" to it. Anybody else ever hear of them? They were indeed a chain. I've found reference to them being as far a...

Bookstores

There're of course Barnes & Noble, Southern player Books-a-Million, and the late lamented Borders. Were there ever any other "big box" bookstore chains? Michigan has Schuler Books, with three stores in Grand Rapids and two in Lansing. Interestingly, Lansing just lost one of its two Bar...
