Re: Diho Supermarket (Asian) chain

There is, however, a 99 Ranch store located in central/west Anaheim at the corner of Euclid and Crescent (just north of the 5 Freeway). It's miles away from any significant Asian population centers (Little Seoul in Garden Grove, Little Saigon in Westminster, and the growing Korean portions of Fuller...

Michael's Market Orange CA

I check in pretty often on a blog about local history in Orange County, CA. This week, the author posted some photos from the "Prospect Plaza" shopping center in the city of Orange, on the southeast corner of Chapman and Prospect Avenues. The 1966 photos (which you can see in greater detai...

Star Market - Porter Square

I remember seeing this system in the early 1990s at the Star Market in Porter Square on the Cambridge/Somerville line during my college days in MA. I'm pretty sure the tubs were numbered and you went to your car with a large corresponding placard, then pulled into line to have your groceries loaded ...

Re: BUFFUMS--Southern California

But remember that merger mania is nothing new. Broadway in Southern CA absorbed B.H. Dyas (Hollywood), Coulter's (LA - Wilshire), Marston's (San Diego area), and Milliron's (LA - Westchester) before 1970. Walker-Scott also had locations in San Diego, OC, and Palm Springs some of which became May Com...

Re: Carl's Jr. defunct additional chains

I think you're mistaken. The Carl's on the other (west) side of La Habra is on the corner of BEACH and Lambert. On the east side there was a Carl's on Harbor just south of La Habra Boulevard. And another one near Imperial Highway and Harbor (which is technically Fullerton, I believe).

Re: Carl's Jr. defunct additional chains

Throughout the late 70s and early 80s there was a very small Carl's Jr. at 120 S. Harbor. Just south of the gas station at the corner of Harbor and La Habra Blvd. The building was demolished for a used car lot about the same time a new Carls was built about a mile south near Harbor and Imperial. I r...

Re: BUFFUMS--Southern California

I don't believe there was ever a Buffums in the Santa Ana Fashion Square (now Westfield MainPlace). I. Magnin, yes. Desmond's, yes. Bullocks, yes. Buffums had a freestanding location nearer to downtown Santa Ana. On the east side of Main Street near 10th. That's where I went to their store closing c...

Re: Target, La Habra

I'm pretty sure (but not 100% certain) that the Imperial Highway Target was built new for Target. I remember in the 80s when Target was new to Southern California, many locations were converted Gemcos or Fedmarts. I grew up in North OC, and am somewhat familiar with local history. I'd like to chat m...

Thrifti-Mart on Harbor Blvd. in Garden Grove

I believe the large T sign you describe on Harbor Boulevard just south of Disneyland was on the northwest corner of Chapman and Harbor. It was an old Thrifti-Mart that was vacant for many years before the Hyatt Regency hotel was built on the property.

Department Store Restaurants

Most Nordstrom locations here in Orange County have a full service restaurant. Bullocks and Buffums both had tea rooms in their stores. The Macy's in South Coast Plaza (which was once a Bullocks - I THINK) has a Wolfgang Pucks located in the store. As does the Macy's flagship on Union Square in SF (...

Hughes La Habra

Hughes Market on Whittier Blvd in La Habra was a relatively upscale store. Probably because it was the market closest to the wealthy areas of La Habra Heights When it became Ralphs, they closed the middle aisle that ran the enitre width of the store (making shoppers feel isolated and lonely) and dro...

Shopper Shuttles

Most of the chains in Southern California that cater to the Latino community offer this shuttle service. I've seen shuttles for Northgate/Gonzalez, Crawford's, and Superior. There is usually a minimum purchase required for shuttle service. The shuttle is part of a solution to the shopping cart probl...

Buffums stores were often paired with Bullocks in the Fashion Square shopping centers. There was a Buffums location in Santa Ana on north Main Street (between 9th and 10th, I believe). The building is now home to some Orange County office - Sheriff's or Probation. Another Buffums was in the La Habra...
