Re: A VA/WV-area Acme Markets chain?
That "Dillon's IGA Foodette" sign looks strangly like it was made from an old Sinclair Oil sign, judging from the shape.

Re: Road Trip Photos
I'm surprised that you didn't take any pictures of Giant Eagles while you were in Pittsburgh. I know a few are in former Kroger buildings...and they may have a few vintage locations of their own there, including a marina-type GE near Uniontown.

Others from the Cleveland area in the past: Southgate, Maple Heights (Pick-N-Pay, Fisher Foods, A&P; currently only supermarket is a Giant Eagle...formerly Twin Valu and Dave's)-this was built on the site of the former May Company store. First Pick-N-Pay store (before 1974) became Cunningham Dru...

Big Bear did have a store in Mansfield in 1962. (I have a scan of the ad on my Ohio Grocery MSN Group site.) Whether they had other stores north of the Columbus area I don't know offhand.

Re: Westlake, OH: Former A&P?
I recall a fire at a Value World thrift store in Euclid, OH several years back(this was in a former Pick-N-Pay)...the fire started in the basement. An early 1990's fire at the former Gillombardo's Bi-Rite on Broadway Avenue in Cleveland (a store built in the early 1960's) also started in the basemen...

Zip'Z had several of their prefabricated domes located in the parking lots of Uncle Bill's and possibly other Cook United discount stores. I know that there were once Zip'Z locations at the Uncle Bill's stores on Broadway Avenue in Cleveland and on Northfield Road in North Randall. The North Randall...

And a product whose commercials appealed more to children than to adults, Hamm's beer. Hamm's Beer commercials, from the late 1950's up until the early 1980's, featured an animated bear rolling on a log: "From the land of clear blue water...Hamm's, the beer refreshing!" Because cartoon ch...

Re: The first store that got me interested in old supermarkets
As a child, I grew up originally near East 131st and Miles Avenue, where, in the early 1960's, there were 4 supermarkets (a Pick-N-Pay, a Kroger, a Fisher Foods, and Kresse's Bi-Rite.) My mother and grandparents visited all 4 stores off and on, as well as a small grocery a few blocks east on Miles A...

Another long-lost brand of popcorn was "TV Time" Popcorn, which came in a pre-measured pouch, with one side containing the popcorn and the other side, a butter flavored shortening/salt mixture. You emptied both sides of the pouch in a saucepan or popcorn popper. A similar, but short-lived ...

While just the reverse of this topic, when CVS took over several Rite Aid stores in the Columbus, OH area, after Rite Aid pulled out of that market, they replaced the blue "RITE AID" awnings on several of the stores with red "CVS/pharmacy" awnings...these are on the free standing...

Jell-O 1-2-3 and Whip 'n Chill
Another product I remember is Jell-O "1-2-3", which divided into layers after it is chilled. That product didn't last very long on the market; roughly from the mid to late 1960's. Jell-O also had a product called "Whip 'n Chill", which was a lot like a fruit-flavored mousse. Agai...
