Re: Old Dairy Queen signs
Some of the DQ's I've been to including the one at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport have photos of earlier DQs. Take a look next time you're in one; fascinating!

Re: Hills
They were in Western New York also. Several Hills stores were in Rochester and I believe that they may have been Two Guys before and Caldor after.

Re: 2306 Almaden San Jose, CA Safeway closed?
Well, this shopper won't be happy... that was the Safeway in between the hotel and my in-laws and was a perfect place to stop. It was a "manageable sized store" as well which is important when you're from out of town and are too tired with two tired out-of-time-zone-sync kids to be searchi...

Re: Livermore, Calif-1963-"88 Super Mart"
Very interesting, thanks for sharing! My principal hobby is model railroading, and my layout is set in 1963. As such I'm particularly interested in the state of the business during that year. I'll "borrow" any data I can get for potential use; for example I'll have a Safeway on my layout b...

(snip) Of course, Grand Union as a company no longer exists, but there ARE still stores with the Grand Union name (actually GU Family markets, but most of the older stores still have the onld name on them) - currently 36, 22 in NY (including several just re-opened under the GU name which Tops had b...

Re: Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips
The last time I was in the Mall at Steamtown in Scranton, PA, there was still an Arthur Treachers' in the food court there-- I was quite surprised since I thought it was completely gone. It's been about a year so I am not sure it is still there. There were AT's in New Jersey for a brief time as well...

Re: Korvettes: "Top Hits" 45RPM Records
Thanks Toby.
I recall both Korvettes and Caldor (where I worked for 9 months in 1981-82) had the letter codes for LPs. This made it easy to both change regular prices (alter the large signs) and have sales.

Korvettes: "Top Hits" 45RPM Records
The random selection of a song on my iTunes dislodged a memory that I'd like to have confirmed or corrected. The branch of E.J. Korvettes in Woodbridge, NJ in which we shopped during the late 1960's and 1970's had a record department, in which there was a small behind the counter partitioned shelf h...

I am pretty sure that the Woolworth's in the Menlo Park Mall in Edison, New Jersey had a basement level. Menlo Park was built fairly early and was a combination outdoor/indoor mall for a while. It's been almost totally rebuilt now and moved quite upscale. I also believe that the one in downtown Pert...

Wegmans closed its Chase-Pitkin Home Improvement Center chain down in 2005, citing competition from national chains. I don't think that they were wrong; I remember just about everything costing more at Chase-Pitkin than at those other two big boxes. They had purchased Bilt-Rite Chase Pitkin in 1974 ...

Kind of a strange way to have a first post here... I'm new to this board but not to the site. I have had a link to Groceteria on my site (irwinsjournal.com) for years now and I visit at least every month or so to see what's new. Thanks so much for your efforts and keep up the good work. This stuff i...
