Re: Western Auto
Western Auto was merged into Advance auto parts when Sears spun it off. As far as I know, there are a few locations left in the USA, however in Puerto Rico Advance is using the Western Auto name, and there are a bunch of stores on the island..

Re: Modern Genuardi's closures
Also - Feasterville was a replacement store for an old old Genuardi's that was converted to a Mad Grocer at one point. They then closed that, bulldozed it, and built the new Genuardi's. That store was always pretty busy! The Acme across the street was actually a relo for an old store that was on the...

Re: Packanack center in Wayne
I can remember that location being a Pantry Pride, with an A&P in the plaza across the street. After Pantry Pride made their departure, it was a Lee Wards arts and crafts store...

Re: A&P in Randolph, Nj
That A&P used to be a Centennial. The original store was on the same property, but faced Rt.10 head on (I could be wrong on the orientation)... It was demolished in the 90's from what I remember..

Re: Acme in Franklin Lakes, NJ?
What is now The Market Basket was originally an Acme. It closed in the early 70's and was replaced by Gristede's for a while. Then, Kilroy's was there, and now The Market Basket. There were 3 supermarkets in town at one point- that one, the Grand Union on Franklin Ave, and also an IGA just up the st...

Re: 7-11
7-11 had been cobranded at SOME locations, I can recall a location in South NJ that was Amoco in the early 90's. Fast forward to today, where certain gasoline jobbers (such as APEC in Tampa, Fl) can develop franchise locations, cobranded with pretty much any major oil company. APEC has one Chevron l...

A&P Future Store
From what I can remember, the first A&P FutureStore was a prototype that opened in Allendale, NJ (about 10 miles from their Montvale, NJ corporate offices).. It had to have opened right around mid 82.. It was a one of a kind in the Northern NJ market, they were scanning (almost nobody was at tha...

I'd expect AHOLD to do a little better than Safeway did on this deal.. Safeway DESTROYED Genuardi's, which, in my book was right up there with Publix as far as quality. (I've lived in the Philly Metro area, NJ, and now Fl..)
It is truly amazing how you can ruin a great family chain so quickly....!

Grand Union..
You guys missed another division... there was also Grand Distributing, which was similar to Service Merchandise. Additionally, in the mid 70's, IIRC, they also had started a small chain of Convenience stores in Northern NJ, which was called EZ. (NO connection to the EZ mart chain) They were later al...
