That's good to know, since Manhattan Beach is representative of the 1980's Bullock's look. Since it's slated to close, I would presume West Covina has been left pretty much untouched, and would still have a 1975 look to it.

I should've mentioned that the Emporium Stonestown only used the call boxes from the store opening in 1952 until the remodel in 1969, when they were removed. From then on, they used the bells. Sorry for the confusion.

In 1977, when I first went to work at Liberty House in downtown San Francisco, I 'floated' throughout the store, working one day a week on the switchboard. The old Safeway closed many, many years before Lucky did. I was very young when we lived in Crestmoor Park from 1957-1964 and I think Safeway closed in the early 1960's. It became a Chrysler car dealership, then Honda, I think.

Loved the photo of the Broadway Market store! I grew up in Millbrae (1964-1977) and only knew of it as a QFI. Judging from the photos, I would guess it opened in the early 1950's. I also fondly remember the SSF store with its cool slanty-overhang entrances. There was a new QFI in the new Serramonte ...
