Re: Modern Kroger designs in Marietta
The Alpharetta Kroger was indeed experimental (google it with "Supermarket News")--it opened in 1996 as a 96k square foot store (that's huge for a regular Kroger) with a food court and a few other features, like an area with warehouse shelving. I don't know what it's like now. What was the...

Re: Baton Rouge supermarkets
I did some re-confirming that there wasn't anything there until Ralphs, and Hi Nabor was never there.

Re: Baton Rouge supermarkets
I think you were right about Hi Nabor after all. I asked my mother about it, and she said it was a Hi Nabor--obviously where I got the idea from, but then continued to say that my cousin "K" worked there, presumably in high school. I have no doubt that "K" did work at Hi Nabor, b...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The old Houston and Dallas Divisions (Now the Southwest Division) used pretty much this numbering system. There is a few crossovers and stores numbered out of the system, but they are few. The old Houston Division was 034, and stores were HP-997. HP standing for Henke Pillot. Dallas was 035, and I ...

Re: Baton Rouge supermarkets
The Airline Kroger isn't part of a car dealership, it's next to it, Rockstar Racing currently (indoor go-kart tracks tend to be a choice for vacant retail, Houston has an ex-Safeway/Kroger being used as one, as well as an ex-Kmart). I never knew a Kroger existed there even though I drove that way al...

Re: Baton Rouge supermarkets
Actually not too sure about the Skaggs situation, because depending on the region they did split different ways. Anyway, there are three Krogers left unfound, though they were probably not Greenhouse stores.

Re: Dominick's
Kind of a bummer that no Dominick's stores could be saved--the loss of Dominick's was the first major loss of Safeway, and probably would've continued to cut back (the Tom Thumb/Randalls division next, likely) had they not been been picked up by Albertsons.

Re: "Albertsons Market"
When the big split happened in 2006, part of the agreement stated that the LLC was only licensing the Albertsons name from Supervalu, who purchased the name. Initially, the two were supposed to share marketing strategies and branding. Initially, the LLC was capitalizing on the sale of property, so ...

Re: Baton Rouge supermarkets
Thanks! The Kroger on Airline is definitely a Kroger: because of Airline Highway bisecting Jefferson, it's on the "southeast" side, that is, 11855 Airline Hwy. The other Krogers probably aren't Greenhouse stores and therefore less immediately obvious. Calandro's being a Winn-Dixie (smaller...

Baton Rouge supermarkets
(Separated from the New Orleans supermarkets thread so it won't get too cluttered) What can you tell me about the Baton Rouge supermarket history? I've always found it a weird and a bit depressing that there's no chains but Albertsons (and Walmart). There's also Winn-Dixie there, but I'd actually ne...

Re: New Orleans area supermarkets
Randall's in Austin began as Tom Thumb, Safeway changed the Austin stores from Tom Thumb to Randall's after acquiring Randall's(and Tom Thumb). What would the reason for that be? I have never been to a Tom Thumb. How different is that chain from Randall's? But I know Randall's bought them in 1992, ...

Re: New Orleans area supermarkets
Schwegmann didn't sell to KKR in 1995, though they did buy the New Orleans division of National Foods from Schnucks, which was the beginning of the end. The 28 store chain had to have 8 stores divested ("Schwegmann, Schnuck deal OK'd." Supermarket News 12 June 1995), later reduced to 7 (&q...

Re: New Orleans area supermarkets
Reading old Supermarket News articles shows that Weingarten was in Arkansas and Louisiana, and those were bought and quickly changed over to Safeway in January 1984. The southern Louisiana stores were part of the Houston division, but were all closed by the end of 1985, so they never became AppleTre...

Re: Albertsons Lawn and Garden Centers
It's not altogether a terrible idea--as a chain, they need some larger-format stores like their competition (H-E-B Plus, Kroger Marketplace, Walmart) but it still needs some work. I'm not sure of that. Even Walmart has realized that the larger stores are more of a burden than a benefit. While Kroge...

Re: Albertsons Lawn and Garden Centers
Yup, and here's another one in Baton Rouge with a garden center that's been defunct for years.
